vinnimac 0 Posted May 4, 2009 Hi all im the owner of a 1.8 16v rado 1990 68000 m iv always had vw ,s 2 polos ,1 scirocco gtx , golf gt tdi and a 170 hp g40 and i thought all my birthday,s had come at once when a bloke at work told me he had a low mile valver in the garage with a blown head gasget he explaned to me he had the book and the parts to fix but lost interest 10 years ago my eyes lit up and i offerd him a cheeky £700 and he accepted brill i thought! i got it back to my garage and set about the head i removed the head to find one big rusty mess all the cyilinders were full of water due to the lack of spark plugs ,slightly damp garage , and evaporation of water condenceing on the underside of the hood and in turn dripping into the cylinders . o well! e bay £ 150 new block and its up and running untill bang ! the gasget has gone again dam so another £160 next one in and i am off again for five lovely days untill the exhaust falls off £300 for a jetex sss and all is well for two weeks untill i do something realy thick i put super diesel in it instead of super unleaded dam! so i read up on what to do/ change the filter flush it out and .....nothing it wont go. I have since given it to a freind who has had it now for 12 months and he rang me up yesterday and its running brill ! BUT it now has an issue when starting from cold he is sure it is something to do with the 5th injector he has tested the thermo time switch and all is well but he said there is something else wired into it . what is it and can any one help? The thing s you do for a vw !!
davidwort 0 Posted May 4, 2009 really need a bit more of a description of the exact problem, the 1.8 16v has a warm up regulator that bolts to the RHS of the head (2 fuel lines going to it) and that provides fuel enrichment until the engine is warm, the CSV (cold start valve/injector) is usually pretty reliable but you can check the operation and the 12V supply to it pretty easily. does the car fair to start or fire but fail to idle? I don't thin diesel would casue a problem in the metering head but injectors could be affected I suppose.
vinnimac 0 Posted May 4, 2009 csv tested and ok thermo time switch tested and ok brand new injectors fitted and second hand metering head fitted when the car is warm it is fine but on a cold start it chugs and splutters for 20sec or so and req throttle to run but soon after its fine and will start fine while warm . my freind is very sure it is something that controlls the csv from start up but not the thermo time switch do you know what else controlls the csv ? ecu? possable
aide 0 Posted May 4, 2009 the thermotime switch allows the cold start valve to run for a preset time when engine is below a preset temp, on a standad valver it's the only thing that allows the cold start valve to work... besides the current that is. i'd be double checking the thermotime and the isv, and then checking the pressures on the whole system including the wur raised above, if its a 2nd metering head then the system pressure could be way out. don't rule out overfueling (leaky injector) causing starting problems either.
