ignition/starter problem

Recommended Posts

I didn't know wether to post this in engine or security so i'm putting it in both.

My 94 Corrado VR6 has an intermitent starting problem. 99 times out of a hundred it starts no problem and then out of the blue it won't start. It won't even turn over, you turn the ignition key and there is nothing at all. you can walk away and come back 30 mins later and it will start as normal. I thought it was the imobiliser but I have had a new alarm and imobiliser fitted and the old one stripped out and it did it again.

Can anyone help?

is the ignition switch easy to check?

Sorry for crossing threads. I hope it didn't put anyone out to much.

Not sure about checking it but mine has been playing up for months. I got a replacement but haven't got round to changing it, it's a bit of a twat.

Sometimes it starts first time sometimes it's the tenth time!! It either turns over or there's nothing - switch is the most likely cause.

does all you igniton lights still come on as normal then? i had this problem with mine, ignition would come on but half the time would not turn over, so have just put a seprate switch inline from bat -incar switch - starter. works for the min till i find a full set off locks as dont want differant keys. only prob is you can run the starter without igntion on (to much hassle to fit relay for a quick bodge) but it works fine maybe worth a try just to see if is your ignition switch gone. must be a design fault as my old mk2 golf done the same to

Changing the switch DOES NOT mean you have to change the key... It's a small plastic switch which goes on BEHIND the lock mechanism which is the problem, not the lock part at all...

Don't bodge your car with a starter switch like this, it may invalidate your insurance as you're bypassing any immobiliser!

It is a design flaw with the starter switch though, as they are simply not rated high enough for the current that's drawn through them, so over time they over heat and fail... A new one is only about £30 from VW and takes about an hour (and a bit of swearing!) to fit yourself and needs no special tools except for a cheap cross-headed watchmakers screwdriver which you don't mind bending slightly!

yeah all the lights come on. i'll look in to getting this part and fitting it. If I go up to vw aberdeen(specialist cars) and order a starter switch for a corrado I should be sorted?

yeah that's the part in question although it would seem a lot of pattern parts are not as good as OEM judging from reports on the forum.

Pays yeah money and takes yer choice mate!!

the pattern ones tend to be crap... simple as.... buy a genuine one and you shouldn't have to do it again for another 10 years or so! :D
