Problems shifting into reverse and first gear

I just purchased a 1992 Corrado SLC and all of a sudden I have been having problems shifting into reverse and first and second gear. I can usually shake the shifter back and forth shift into third and then get it to shift into first or second. The place I got an inspection done at says I need a new shift assembly but I'm not sure I trust them. Any ideas from the board?
