Anyone changed their private plates?

Recommended Posts

Just wanted to know whats involved in swapping a private plate from one car to another?

What paperwork do you need from DVLA and costs involved?

If you remove the plate from a Corrado does it just revert to its original number plate?

Cheers.

Mrs 4eyes has had a private plate for a few years and changes her car pretty :censored: regularly.

It is a bit of a pain to be honest. You have to have all the usual road tax type paperwork (mot, insurance, V5) plus the existing tax disk. You have to take it to one of their regional offices (in our case in Wimbledon) and wait around with the car dealers. You get issued with a temporary tax disk then get sent the proper one at which point you can swap the plates. Generally the car reverts to it's original plate.

Bit of a palaver and from memory it costs £80 a pop!

There is info on the DVLA (DVLC?) website.

you got all your paperwork from your purchase?? Im sure the info you need is all on there.

Yes your car will go back to original plate mate unless this has been taken from DVLA DB for some reason in which case they will issue an alternative.

IIRC the cost to exchange is SIRO £80

Hope this helps :D

Anytime I have done it you need form V317 you can print it off.

Your reg document,or your new owner section.

MOT cert.

Tax disc expiry date(you dont need to take in or send it off)

Cheque or cash for £80.

They will issue you with a replacement tax disc there and then.(they do in Glasgow)

Yeah they don't even give you a bit of old rope for the money you hand over to them either. That's a nice little earner for the DVLA. When you consider that the admin needed basically involves paying some underpaid sod in Swansea to type your new reg into the computer and press "OK" (from which a computer produced V5 is posted to you) it's a pretty outrageous fee really.

I have just done a plate transfer, local office (Dundee) quoted 7 Day return, most of them are done in - house these days, so even less admin charges

Cheers for all the info, a big help as had heard horror stories on how much it would cost. :(

Plates were changed years ago but I think I've got the documents in with a folder of receipts from previous owners.

So is it £80 to change the plate to its original and then another £80 to have the private reg put on another car?

£80 all in, £105 if you want to put the reg onto a retention cert to use at a later date
