288 brakes refurbishing - a tip.

I am in the process of refurbishing a set of 288 brakes - new seals, guide bushes, de-rusting etc.

 

I dont know how many others have done this job, but one difficulty seemed to be in removing the piston from its housing - easy to push it in, but a more difficult job to remove it altogether.

 

How to do it ( only possible if you have a brake line that can be butvhered and discarded) :-

 

Acquire a tyre valve - a friendly tyre dealer may provide one at little or no cost.

 

Cut the brake line squarely and neatly

 

Force the tyre valve onto the brake line so it seals well - it should be a reasonably good air-tight fit

 

Attach a footpump to the valve

 

Apply pressure - slowly and evenly.

 

This will force the piston out - but make sure it has somewhere safe to fall out onto, and it may pop out 'fast' and suddenly if you put much pressure into the brake line !

 

And make sure you have an absorbant rag to hand if there is any brake fluid remaining in the piston housing.
