CAT....

Recommended Posts

sorry mods if this should be in general car chat...

The post earlier prompted me to look at my CAT shield. it's been welded before at VW about 5 years ago, but not very well as it needs some TLC again, it just needs a bead of literaly 10mm to sort it out. Not a problem to do myself as i have a welder and I'm quite confident. i was just lazy last time to do it myself as they had it up on the ramps at VW.

Anyway i've cleaned the area up and a place for an earth.

but do I....

1) just weld as it is....

2) just weld as it is but disconnect the battery...

3) play it safe and take the CAT off, and do it on the bench... I'm guessing VW never did it like this.

I'm guessing there is only about a fiver of fuel in the tank at present, it's on the red :(

any other advice for a 2 min job, most welcome

Definately disconnect the battery! I did a little welding on my wife's tailpipe (ooo-er! ) and had no probs with the electrics afterwards.

I am surprised they welded it before as the same thing happened to mine and I was told they couldn't do it because the heat would damage it.

just looked through my records and it was last done in 2002 at 32K at the VW dealer. I'm guessing the CAT wont get too hot and will only be localized to arcing the bracket together.
