Charcoal Filter... is it needed??

As title really, in the left hand side of the bay in my G60 there is a Charcoal Filter (black canister) and its blicking a rather large hole that would make a good Cold air feed to my Charger,

 

My question is... Is it needed? what does it actually do??

absorbs fuel vapour that is then released and burnt when the engine is running IIRC

you can remove it, shouldn't though as it's emissions related, like venting a block to the atmosphere.

The odds are it barely does anything at all anymore. Took mine off a long time ago.

 

Emissions on the mot for pre 92 are allowed to be high anyway so doesnt matter in that sense.

 

I just chopped the lines and blanked with bolts.

Got rid of mine ages ago and never had any issues with emissions. So its not really needed from and emissions or engine performance point of view.

no, I didn't mean exhaust emissions,

it's illegal to vent a crankcase straight to the air if the car was built to burn oil-vapour in the engine, so I imagine that technically it's not legal to change the manufacturers fuel vapour emission control (i.e. the carbon cannister)

It does make a difference to the VR, they see it as some sort of air leak if removed.
