A little bit of help

Recommended Posts

I am an avid reader of this forum but rarely get the chance to put much on the website as most people tendtobeat me to it.

I have just finished repairing my VR after an accident at the end of 2009, it was only a cracked headlamp and hole in the bumper but they decided to write it off, but it's looking pretty good if I say so my self. To try and keep the costs down I have had to do alot of the work my self, but one of friends who owns the local spray shop painted it, but I had to do all the prep and post work on the car, he just applied the paint. I have had a few niggles as the car has been standing for a while, like the engine hunting a little, probably needs to be taken for a good spin, after some new oil and plugs and a litlle TLC.

After all the work that I have put into it I don't really want to get rid of it, but I have just tried to get insurance for the VR and its proving to be very hard. I cant seem to get a quote under £1500, which I think is extortionat, when it cost me less the £400 when I was last driving it. I am almost 30 so I dont tend to go ripping down the local stretch in town any more, just enjoy driving it.

My question is, what do you think would be the best option, sell it to someone who is going to be able to insure it, or just carry on trying to see if there is some way I can try and not fill Mr Cameron's pockets any more.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thanks for your help in advance,

Adam

Hi I know exactly how you feel my qoute went from £700 comp last year up to £1600 this year, I am now with lancaster classic and it cost me £550 fully comp, im only 25 live in south wales and had my car liciense for 4 years. For me the "classic policy" was about 60-70% cheaper than anywhere else. Good Luck!!!!!

Ouch! That is extortianate. I take it the car has been Cat C/D'd? Some insurers really don't like that. In general insurance has gone up a lot just in the last year, I know plenty who's renewal is more expensive than their current policy, regardless of an extra years NCB. I guess you've checked all the comparison sites as well as companies that aren't listed on them?? Admiral have always been cheap for me.

It would be a shame for you to sell it after working hard to restore it.

Adam, it's heart wrenching that people like us lot have such a connection with a car like the Corrado, put in blood sweat tears and cash just to be told by a face-less insurance company that you can longer afford to drive it because of 'higher claims due to snow' and 'other inconsiderate young drivers'. I'm around the same age as you (31) with just a handful of NCBs to my name (but no accidents etc) I insured my VR6 as a classic limited mileage second car. I use another car as my commuter mainly cos the Corrado is in a million pieces but also was because of the ridiculous insurance as my main car.

Now I'm not saying it works for everyone however, if your best quote was around £1500 perhaps it might be worth looking at insuring another cheaper car as your primary and putting the rado onto a similar insurance policy to mine. I pay a little over £140 a year fully comp.... yep you read that right. Limited mileage (I think 5000 miles) and insured as my second car (which it actually is in my case). That would potentially leave you with a saving of £1360 to buy and insure and second super-cheap car (perhaps for you significant other??).

Don't break any rules - I'm not suggesting breaking the law by lying however if you're able to have another primary car insured for less than the saving then you're quids in....

I hope this makes sense.... It's past 10pm and I've just had to watch Glee with the Mrs and my brain has died a little.

Let me know if I can explain it any better.

Best of luck.

Jim

Chrrrist! Some of you are being ripped off! I pay just over a grand for a 300 bhp limit and I have a claim from 4 years ago and I thought that was expensive. Hunt around, specialists are always worth the extra 10 mins phone call. And lie when they ask you what you cheapest quote was. ;)

Thanks for all your help guys. I think I will have to do what Jim has suggested, I think one of the issues is that I have just moved into Cardiff City centre and I know the CF postcode isnt the cheapest, but it was only costing me just over £400 before I had the bump. Its so annoying when an accident isnt your fault, yet you get penalised for it. The main reason I decided to keep the corrado was that I was moving into the city centre so I didnt need the car during the week, so I would just use it on the weekends to see my little one. But looks like its going to be a tricky one.

Thanks for all your help and hopefully I will see one of you around the South Wales area driving the C.

Just a quicky also, does anyone know if anyone is looking for a G60 engine or charger, as my friend who helped me with the car has what looks like a very well rebuilt engine, not too sure of specs but has green injectors so Im assuming its higher spec than standard and a rebuilt charger. Neither of them have been run yet, so are like new. If any one is interested PM me and Ill pass you over his details.

Thanks again, and I can't believe you owned up to watching Glee, Jim :)
