Wullie 1 Posted July 3, 2012 I'm having a problem with my PC connecting to facebook, it won't. I can connect to other sites no problem. At first I thought it may be the router, BT Homehub 2 but I can connect to facebook OK on my son's PC, (Windows XP Pro), so that kind of rules that out I've got a new PC with Windows 7 Home Premium on it and it seemed to be OK at first. I've tried system restore, no use. Flushed the DNS cache, no use. Turned off Windows Firewall to no avail. I've installed and uninstalled Chrome till it's dizzy. IE9 has the same problem. I know it's got to be some stupid little setting somewhere, but what and where the Frell is it. Anyone got any suggestions. I'm also running AVG Free Anti virus software. Supercharged 2 Posted July 3, 2012 Do you get anything on screen at all? If you click on start and type CMD into the search box, in the dos bos that appears type 'ping http://www.facebook.com' - paste the results into here... ---------- Post added at 8:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 8:17 PM ---------- If the above seems to work and pings then I think maybe Java is broken = try downloading the latest version - http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp ---------- Post added at 8:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 8:20 PM ---------- If the above seems to work and pings then I think maybe Java is broken = try downloading the latest version - http://java.com/en/download/index.jsp
Andi 2,147,483,647 Posted July 3, 2012 Facebook doesn't use Java. It's all javascript (built in to modern browsers). I'd ditch Avast and replace with Avast (http://www.avast.com). Tried Firefox instead of Chrome?
Wullie 1 Posted July 3, 2012 Well I tried removing Java and re-installing to no avail, then Chrome froze while trying to upload my reply here and I just when I tried to get back in it told me the forum was down!! I thought I might have broken it. Then I had to go out and now I'm back. Pinging and tracert to facebook seem fine. I'll try Firefox and this Avast thingy and see what happens from there. Thanks for the advicw so far guys, can't be many car forums where you get computer advice. Ping and tracert responses below. Supercharged 2 Posted July 4, 2012 Wullie - have you tried a reset of IE settings (under tools\options)?
Wullie 1 Posted July 4, 2012 Well I'm completely lost here. I had tried that previously and again last night. Reset, uninstalled, reinstalled swore, asked nicely and after switching off Windows Firewall again I managed to get everything working again about 3 this morning. Hooray. Came down this morning and everything still working. Another hooray then realised that I wasn't getting a warning that my computer was unprotected. Checked and found Windows firewall has turned itself back on!!!WTF Anyway, whatever it or I did it's working OK again. Can access Facebook and this forum is a lot faster than it was. Thanks guys.
