Understanding technical images (vagcat etc)

If you look at number 35 in the following image, how do you tell how many is required/used? I'm sure if you go to the dealers they can tell you, but looking at this image I think you need one. Looking at my new rad, I think I need two (one per side).

You can't is the simple answer. Its an VW illustration only, if two are needed it would be listed in the VW parts list which is not replicated on that web page. Half useless unless you have a supporting copy of ETKA.
