VR6 not starting :(

Recommended Posts

Well it has been off the road and garaged for the past 5 years and not started in at least the last 12 months so it is probably not surprising that she's putting up a fight.

Anyhow, after a bit of searching we found the part numbers for the fuel pump and ecu relays and have changed those - we now have the fuel pump whirring. It is so close to firing it is unbelievable, but it just wont kick. Also read on here about how the rev counter should move ever so slightly on turning it over if the ecu is working, if that is the case the rev counter isn't moving at all.

We changed the battery, it isn't a heavy duty though, and wasn't brand new although it came from a friend and were assured it was in full working order.

It is going in to a local VW specialist to have other bits and bobs that it needs doing for the MOT but as that is likely to cost an arm and a leg I'd really like to get it running ourselves before it goes.

What would the next suggestions be? Before we took it off the road it was running fine, just decided to mothball it cos of young kids and running costs.

To be clear, you are saying you have both spark and fuel coming out of the lines; correct? If so, have you tried draining out the old petrol and replacing it with new petrol? believe it or not, it makes a difference.

Yep, as mentioned before, petrol is usually useless after 2-3 years. Drain it, put new petrol and it should start.
