New G60 Owner, Pics and Probs

Hey guys! just picked up a 1990 Corrado G60 for a steal. Found receipts for $1900 in new parts under the hood (hoses, gaskets, plugs, etc) from 5 years ago. 187,000mi on the odo and survived a 3hr drive back from Northern California late last night (at 22mpg!)

 

Previous owner chipped the ecu, added a supercharger performance kit (slightly smaller pulley) +12, slotted rotors, added some kind of sport suspension, and a few other things so I thought it was a great place to start.

I had an MKIII Wolfsburg Jetta that was destroyed in a car accident a couple years ago so when I saw this I couldn't help myself. When I picked it up, the PO threw in a reman. alternator, fuel rail, throttle body, tail lights, and a couple more misc vacuum/air related parts.

 

 

On the drive back I noticed a few issues that i'll be working through. Since I'm completely new to the VW shop i'll be looking through countless forum posts, manuals, and videos daily.

 

  • Metal on metal sound when the cooling fan (i think) intermittently turns on.
  • Smoking under heavy acceleration
  • Hesitation/lag/flooding when hard accelerating (especially from 1st)
  • Possible vacuum leak (dash pic below)
  • Possible starting issue. Clicks a couple of times then turns over.
  • Rattling from under the car. Sounds like metal bouncing on metal.
  • Physically broken turnsignal switch
  • Loose parking brake switch (flashing dash light)
  • Broken Speedometer cable

 

Since I need to smog it, I've already started looking into the smoking issue. I've seen many folks say it's most likely hoses on the back of the throttle body, O2 sensor or O2 sensor wiring. Since the car came with an extra throttle body, i think it's a probable mixup when he reconnected the hoses. I've checked a couple of technical diagrams and i can't make heads or tails of what's going on. (probably should throw in the towel now, eh? :p)

 

The hose from the loom on the firewall is connected to the inlet closest to the IM.

The other hose is coming from the right, running along the firewall and connected to the inlet closest to the intake hose.

is that right? In some diagrams i see the inlet on the right connected to a BOV(?) I'm still new to the world of forced induction, please forgive.

 

 

 

 

I checked readings from MFA2 and it seemed like it was low.

I took it for a drive around the block to see what the readings were from a higher RPM but couldn't get going fast enough due to it bogging down on take off. It died on me when i came to a stop sign and I didn't have a chance to switch it over again to check the boost.

 

On the 3hr drive back i kept an eye on the aftermarket boost gauge.

Most of the ride @3k @70mph it was sitting 18-20Hg.

When I would accelerate and start to coast it would drop to 12-10Hg.
