I've changed my oil twice this year and I think I've been putting to thin an oil in. Due to the age of the car I think I need thicker oil. I just don’t know what to put in.

No crunchy gear box yet. I've been pretty lucky so far. Touch wood. Although the revs are a bit dodgy. I couldn't expect anything less from a K plate.

It's done about 150000 miles. I don’t believe it’s the chain because the noise quietens done a little once the engines warmed up although it doesn't completely disappear. I also hear the going rate for a engine overhaul is about £1K which has to be the last resort.

Having problems with my Vr6 engine. The engine is making a ticking noise. I was told it was the tap-its. Changed them. Noise still there. Then told the problem could be the valve guides. Is this worth changing the valve guides or would it be better with an engine overhaul? Also would thicker oil work as a solution for the moment and what's recommended?

I’ve recently been advised to change my Tappets on my Vr6 because of the knocking noise coming from the engine, so I sent away for some standard ones, they arrived and my mate did them as a favour. He informed me that the problem wasn’t the Tappets but the Cams so he replaced the old ones. What I’m asking for is some information on which Cams to buy, will they come with Tappets or will the standard ones I bought do the job? All I know is that the cams you buy depends on how many miles you do. In my case not very much.

I rang up for an insurance quote today for my 20vT syncro...

At the end of last year I bought my first C. A 1.8 16v and the cheapest quote I got was for £564. Just last week I bought a C vr6, changed my insurance to Elephant and named my girlfriend as another driver. My insurance has dropped from £564 to £316. Apparently if you name another driver it makes all the difference. -
I think thats me happy now! Cheers for the help!!

So what your saying is that I need to order two upper chains and one upper guide rail??
-
In that case I think I'll leave the chain as it is!! Are they classed as upper/ lower guides and tensioners?

Finally got a price on parts and labour after a garage quoted me £450+vat for replacing the tappets. I nearly died of shock so did some hunting around. The parts come to £101 i.e. 12 tappets, upper timing chain, oil filter and 2 rocker gaskets. The labour still comes to £200 and that’s a homer, but its still a saving of £150. Hope this web site can help anyone else. http://www.vwspares.co.uk/delivery.html

Thanks for the help!! Its gave me something to think about.

Just been informed by someone its more likely to be the tappets. It has to be the most annoying sound ever though.Been told that a thicker grade oil could reduce the noise. Whats recommended??

The C has done about 129000 miles. It’s more like a constant tick; tick, ticking noise than a knocking. When you push down on the accelerator the noise is there but when you take your foot off the pedal it goes. Even when idling.

Seem to be having yet another problem with my VR6. When the car accelerating or idling there’s a constant knocking noise coming from the driver’s side of the engine. At first I thought the alignment of one of the belts was out or that a bearing had gone, but no nothing that simple. Can anyone shed any light on this matter before I put it into a garage and get charged a small fortune?
