1. Just been out to investigate and as suggested the rocker cover gasket is not well fitted and there is evidence of an oil leak right above cylinder 1's spark plug...could be at least a partial solution to the problem
2. Sounds interesting - is this a product that needs directly applied to the seals - ie head needs taken off? or do you just squirt it somewhere indiscriminate;y? I'm not very technical :)
3. The electrode on plug 1 was fouled, yes, and the threads were oily too.
4. That's precisely what it does. that's potentially good news...but I'm surprised when the valve seals have purportedly been done. Of course there's a big difference between being 'done' and 'done properly' and I have no proof that they have. I was thinking it would be unusual that the bores are worn at only 102k. be good to hear others' opinions...
5. Not sure when head was rebuilt - would guess between 2010 and 2013 some time. and it was done by the previous owner's mechanic after he bought the parts himself, so no details on file.
6. My VR6 was running roughly, so I took the plugs out to check them. The plug from cylinder 1 was the worst - covered in oil (oil has even managed to splash out on to the HT lead cap as well). The other plugs were in better nick but still a little oily in places. The previous owner told me he had the head rebuilt (with new valve stem seals). He also had it compression tested, and it was good in all six cylinders. So I'm confused - if the valve stem seals were replaced then it can't be them, but surely if the compression is good then it can't be the bores! The engine has 102k on it. but what do you guys think?
7. The head was rebuilt and compression tested before I bought the car, and all was fine at the time, apparently. if a rebore is required, that would involve getting a 2.8 block and getting everything ground out to 2.9, is that right? or would I be better off just getting a new engine? The thing still performs fine, worst case scenario is I just change plugs every so often and keep an eye on the oil level.
8. My VR6 has been running poorly for ages, so I decided to change the spark plugs today - which did the trick. The worst one was on no. 1 cylinder, and it looked like this (click for bigger image) I suspect either worn bore in that cylinder or valve stem seals - what everyone else think? Oil is obviously getting in and fouling the plugs - you can smell burning oil as well. (The car does give a puff of blue smoke when you press the throttle after downhill engine braking)
9. I've now discovered that I also blew fuse 16 (15A) as well as fuse 21 (30A). God knows what's causing this. anyone know what the black wire behind the interior trim on the A pillars is supplying power to?
10. Aye, about half a tub of grease! Put my Corrado metal lid back on to the mechanism and it all fitted very well, to be honest. Nothing to suggest motor strain but I'll check it out. The fuse blew without me trying the motor first, I've just remembered. It happened when I was refitting the interior. Possibly when refitting the A pillar trim. Is it possible I've disturbed some wiring or something?
11. I installed a Golf mk3 sunroof mechanism to my 93 VR6 over the weekend, which works very well. My old motor fitted perfectly to it. today i went to use it and nothing happened. I also noticed that my clocks, odometer and interior light were gone. I checked the fuses and fuse 21 (30A) was blown so I changed it. The displays and interior lights came back but still no sunroof. Have I missed anything - other fuses/relay,or has the motor suddenly committed suicide?
12. Here we have four BBS ‘basketweave’ wheels with tyres. These are designed for the Corrado VR6, but I believe they also came on mk3 Golfs. I’ve now decided to go for original VR6-spec Speedline five-spokes, so these are up for grabs. They’re similar in appearance to the RZ as fitted to the Corrado G60, but are more curved in profile and are 5 stud. Diameter: 15” Width: 6.5” ET/Lug pattern: 5 x 100 Offset: 32mm VW part number: 1H0 601 025G Perhaps most importantly the set comes complete with four centre caps (part number 191 601 149K) In decent condition - a couple of lacquer bubbles in the inner spokes, but overall pretty good. Unkerbed and straight. Come shod with Mohawk M112 tyres, with tons of tread left on them. Collection from Belfast (or delivery at buyer’s cost and arrangement!) I’ve seen individual (much scruffier) examples advertised for £90 each, so I’m asking £250 ono for the set.
13. Very specific one - would you have the centre of the gear knob? the little disc with the numbers on it? Understand if you don't want to sell separately (I have a good leather gearknob but the disc is lost you see)

15. I'm going to resurrect this thread and ask for the same bit - just the sticker if anyone has one!
16. According to the DVLA tax check website, it has MOT until 6 December this year. I think what's happened is that it's had Northern Irish MOTs since 2010 and the NI and GB systems were only recently centralised, which is why the MOT check alone gives conflicting information. Doesn't explain the mileage issue though. Still, registered April 1996, that's got to be one of the last ones. I actually think he could get away with asking for more. £2150 is what I paid for my non-leather interior, 1993 VR6 in 2014.
17. So after having the sparks and HT leads changed recently on my 1993 VR6 (later spec clocks with the red needles )my speedo is starting to play silly buggers: What happens: speedo needle doesn't move at all for the first 5-10 minutes of the journey then it twitches and comes back to life while it's dead, the odometer, trip meter and spoiler do not work either same for the MFA's average speed and total distance functions additionally, the oil temperature usually doesn't work, and when it does I suspect it's too low (never goes above 80 and seems to drop too) the MPG is always at 99.9 What am I looking at, do you think? Cheers in advance
18. Did the VR6s ever come with BBS rims as standard instead of the Speedlines? Mine's an April 1993 VR6 with cloth interior, but has the 'G60' wheel on it, the BBS RZ(?) are these standard or likely to have been fitted by a previous owner?
19. Cheers Jim I just got sorted: thanks anyway.
20. I replaced mine, which had no black surround, with one that did and it fitted perfectly, if that's any use to you 191 853 601 H is the part number for the old one, off a later Corrado
21. Mine's AA in that case, thanks
22. Cheers mate! Much appreciated
23. Cheers for the heads-up What sort of bulb is it? Thing is I think something is missing in my case. I have the black light cover bit(the visible bit in the dashboard with 'ABS' written on it) and an empty cream plastic bit behind it that slots into the multi plug, but I am sure there's another bit missing that should slot in between the two, as though a previous owner has been tampering with it. do i need anything else?
24. Would like a later style ABS light unit for my 1993 VR6 please. Including the metal clips if possible! cheers
25. I don't believe so - I get condensation from the exhaust on first start-up, but I'm pretty sure it's not oil smoke. If it wasn't for having to negotiate hills i wouldn't even know there was a problem with the car at all. I suppose the main issue here is - how do you find out what it is without taking the engine apart? which is going to cost you regardless
