  1. This is an interesting thread, that I've found whislt searching for information about removing a shift tower from a Mk3 16v 02A (CDA) gearbox. I'm wanting to put the shift tower into another 02A box, but an earlier generation. The CDA 'box has an 02j style case (boxy around the diff), and the shift tower works with a mk4 set of cables.... the other box has what I presume is an older style tower, and doesn't work with the cables. The reason for wanting to swap, is the CDA 'box has an open diff, the other has a quaiffe atb in it.... I've undone the two bolts on the shift tower, but it doesn't want to move. Should I be more agressive (use a soft mallet), or is it likely I've overlooked something? All help appreciated!
  2. OOOhh, pretty shiny new bits! 8) About the price of a Mk4 GT-TDI going on the timing!
  3. Nice piece of kit........ No need to signal, gold card membership of the fast lane, and on this particular car, I heard the "loud" pedal can be used to "turn off" annoying flashing blue lights in the rear view mirror....! :fist: :lcop:
  4. Ah - now I know which oddballs chose to live with Radford! :cuckoo: That said I'm a bit sad for recognising the cars before the names....
  5. Cheers for the reply. What did you use to cut the ring compressor?
  6. Hi, Myself and a friend are rebuilding a VR, and having now got the block back from the machine shop, the next stage is to fit the pistons. With the cylinders being at an angle to the block face, I'm imagining it's going to be a more difficult exercise than fitting would be with perpendicular bores. Does anyone know of recommended techniques? Any helpful suggestions would be really appreciated....... before we start snapping rings, and scoring bores  :D Cheers, John.
  7. N'ah I mean do away with the auxillary fan (the one on the front of the block), the mass of pipework by the inlet manifold, the post cat lambda sensor, and any other emissions related components, which on an older car (pre euro-3 ? emissions regs) aren't required. I think it's a bit of a myth that you can't use standalone on a daily driver - it just depends on the quality of the map. I know of 4 people using standalone systems on a daily drivers, without any of the fabled "cold-start" issues. The 20vt I did with a friend has done over 10k as a daily driver so far, and it's absolutly fine. Starts on the button, and is as happy pootling to the shops, as it is being trashed on track.
  8. Can you disable all the emissions guff too? I'm curious, as when my friend and I did his 20vt Golf, nobody was offering a OEM option without using all the emission cack, and the keys / clocks.

  10. It sits horizontally just in front of the gearbox, and has a crude inverted impreza style scoop.
  11. From the filth on your hands, anyone would think you work down a coal mine! :) Good article. Any chance of getting the car and your name on the "hall of fame" before you let it go!?
  12. First reaction: WTF - just 1000 miles of driving after near enough 4 years of effort! Too much blood has been spilt on that car to let some other bugger enjoy it. If things stay as they are, you'll make more on a house in a year, than you'll make selling the Corrado. By the way, why is the webpage called "ben_for_sale"? :? If you're going to pimp anyone, I'd suggest you'll make more from your sister, going on the remarks a few pages back :-P  !
  13. 1.8t every time..... vr6s sound good, but aren't overly quick, and worsen the weight distribution. One of my friends has a 1.8t mk2 golf with avo coilovers, the other a Corrado vr6 with koni coilovers. The golf (admittedly a lighter car, and not a direct comparison in other respects too) makes a complete mockery of the Corrado in every performance test: straight line, roadholding / chuckability. VRs do make very pleasant mile munchers though. £3.5k fitted sounds like a good deal to me.
  14. Yeah I spotted it in the pic - lurking by the bulkhead. It does seem the most likely culprit, assuming the mapping is good. Once the DTA is connected to a laptop it should be pretty easy to check it's working, as you said above. There's a neater solution: http://www.qpeng.com/conversion_guide_7.html - see step 26 ;-)
  15. I don't think it's your coil, as when they go, in my experience, they only show up as faulty under boost / high load. They're fine bumbling around town under vacuum and very mild boost, but then the engine miss-fires horrifically when you put your foot down. The AGU coils (big square-ish items held to the cam cover by 4 bolts?) are meant to be ultra reliable, and a far cry from the later push fit coils. I don't know what the DTA is like, but Ben mentioning the map corrupting is plausible if the DTA ECU is anything like a Haltech ECU - they occasionally screw up for no reason, and reloading the map fixes the problem. R.e Coxy's firing of the spark plugs to purge the cylinders. Is there a function on the DTA you can enable, where if you try and crank the car with the throttle fully open, the injectors are turned off? The MBE ecu does this, and it can be handy. Does the DTA use all the OEM sensors, and its own MAP sensor, or does it use DTA specific sensors throughout?
  16. Just one word Ben: VIDEO!!!!!!!!!! Come on lets see it in action!!!! :D
  17. That's good news - well a pass would have been pleasing, but to only hit those two snags after all the modifying is pretty impressive. Bring on next Saturday!
  18. Have you put a VW (Mk4 style?) satnav headunit in too??
  19. Ben, Stick with it - once it's done and dusted, you'll have a constant smile on your face when tooling around in it! Just look back at your post after you drove it last weekend - says it all! Just to stick up for standalone ECUs... Mark's car is spot on with the MBE ECU. For motivation: it kept a Boxster S sweet from 40 - 100 without too much effort yesterday. I look forward to seeing the car at No Rice / down in Dorset in the near future! Cheers.
  20. Ben - you got it sorted - smart! This thread NEEDS VIDEOS!!!!!!!!
  21. Ah - I was wondering when this thread would spring back to life! Ben - what stopped you starting the car? I heard rumour that a caveman clobbered a fairly critical component..... Could you drop me a PM with your active email address? I'm looking into trimming my dash (not on the dagenham dustbin!) in leather, and for comparison I'd like to know what you paid for aspects of your interior. Cheers, John. p.s. I'm really looking forward to seeing this car roadworthy!
  22. Ben, :offtopic1: Quick high-jack.... I'll drop you a line on Sunday, on the off chance you're at the Pod - doesn't look too likely if the forecasts are to be believed. The Golf is road legal now, so should be there. Doubt it'll go down the strip though - tempting fate! I'm half tempted to take the sh1t-box there to razz to hell down the strip, but a) it'd be embarassingly slow (16 seconds(!) @ 90mph GAY!), and b) I doubt you VW chaps would like to see a Dagenham dustbin at a VW event! Cheers, John. p.s. I hope the 'box swapping goes well. I can't imagine it's an easy job to get correct.
  23. Hi, Not quite "under the bonnet", but still engine related. I'm trying to settle a discussion, where I'm saying a Corrado 16v main fuel pump (housing, filter mounting, assembly to chassis mounting points) is identical to a Golf MK2 16v fuel pump, and a friend disagrees. Do you know who is correct? Thanks, John.
