  1. I've been running merc 190 injectors for months on my 1.8 straight swop and no issues so far.
  2. FWIW I'd say fuel pump is most likely candidate.
  3. Cheers Dec I like the megasquirt option because pre-turbo I can set-up both fueling maps and ignition and spend time learning all the idiosyncracies of the system on a vehicle I know is running well at the moment. (I've probably jinxed that now having put it in writing!) work done on it now will not be wasted as I'll be running the same known good pre-turbo set-up once the turbo is fitted. This allows me to test each part of the set-up and get it working efficiently before adding the next bit. I'm buying bits that are going to stay on the car rather than having to sell them off and buy the replacement system I plan on running ultimately anyway.
  4. Oh yeah, also gives me something to play with whilst sourcing the other bits needed for the turbo conversion!
  5. I like the idea of tinkering and also getting the custom fueling and ignition side sorted and working effectively (and my ability to understand and tune it effectively) on the standardish engine before adding the turbo.
  6. Need to pick peoples brains. I have 2.0 abf bottom end, kr 16V head and k-jet mechanical fuel injection. ideal long term plan is to turbo charge this set-up for some decent power. HOWEVER I can't afford to do it all in one hit but I like doing the tinkering thing and so am looking at a staged modification program that I can pay for over time getting each bit working well before introducing the next bit. I was thinking I would look at improving the fuel delivery and then the ignition side of things and I would like to go megasquirt/sns I think. so the first hurdle is access to a fuel rail so I can run electronic injectors rather than mechanical ones. Did the later corrado's use a fuel rail for the electronic injectors? and would this be a straight swap? if not has anybody else found a suitable existing VW fuel rail that will do the job? I was hoping to get something from a breakers rather than a £150 aftermarket jobbie!!
  7. had something similar recently. it was the ignition switch.
  8. usual routine as I understand it is they seize everything and then release the car back to the customer on proof of ownership and payment for completed work. bigger issue is for those that have paid for parts and not received them yet as they will be bottom of the list of creditors and unlikely to receive any of their money back :(
  9. title says it all. talk on club gti forum is of TSR having gone bust. the receivers have apparantly seized all assests including customers cars until ownership is proved. anybody know anymore?
  10. this is normal. there is an over run sensor on a bracket on the left hand side (when viewed from the front of the car) of the head near the airbox. Looks like a bolt with a spade connector on the top of it. you should find the fan switches on for few minutes then turns of automatically once the sensor has cooled down.

jump lead should do it for testing purposes

    Car dead :-(

Ho hum, been there done that, within three months I was onto a full on, unbudgeted, bottom end rebuild. HOWEVER now I'm out the other side ( temporarily I'm sure!! ) she is a joy to drive and worth the effort and expense. if you're in it for the short haul sell now! if you don't mind spending some time, effort and of course money then theres worse cars to be hooning around in ;)

on the back of the starter motor you should have a really thick cable straight to the battery and a thiner one (which goes to the ignition switch) take a cable of similar diameter direct from the battery positive to the place the thiner cable is connected and you should hear the starter turn over. make sure the cars in nuetral before you do this or you could run yourself over!!

are you getting any clicking noise or similar under the bonnet? Have you checked the battery is still charged? are all the connections to the starter motor okay? are the connections to the battery okay? have you fiddled with any other parts of the car? look around where you were working on the fan switch, have you dislodged any other connectors whilst working there?
  15. okay bits I've done recently. fitted the de-badged grill with eyebrow spoiler, just fitted the audi guage pod in the centre console in place of the ashtray. (just need to spend a fortune on the two senders to do the oil temp and 5bar pressure now!!). New black aeriel ordered to replace the sh**e aluminium thing already on it. investigated the heating system to find out why I can't get any air through the upper air vents (wished I hadn't as I now see that the gear that controls the flap to redirect the air to the upper vents has broken) MORE MONEY!
  16. I'm in Barnstaple, North Devon. so I have a nice cross country a road drive from here to the M3 and then onto Kingston where the outlaws are. by the time I get back the C should be ready for a quick once over by the garage that did the rebuild and then off to stealth for some proper tweeking. I see from your signature your VR6 is 'under repair' is it serious or just the usual on-going issues that all C's seem to suffer?
  17. thanks mate, the wait has been worthwhile to get the old girl back knowing that the engine is basically fully rebuilt and once run in can be given some welly without constantly worrying about which bit will go next! I'm off to london next week to do the outlaws thing :( but the upside is the C will be pretty much run in by the time I get back. Then its of to stealth for a little fine tuning :))
  18. This week I have mostly been...... changing the dash to give blue light and doing the oichan mod to the lcd. Polarising filter has been reversed and blue filter inserted. not entirely happy with the lcd currently so more work needed but the blue dash lighting is nice!
  19. figured it was about time I did a bit about my C here she is:- a 1988 G plate 1.8 16 valve bought around october 2005. all the usual problems, spoiler didn't work, sunroof (still) doesn't work :( , various lumps and bumps on the body work from nearly 20 years of car parks and the 161,000 on the clock. bought as she had had a rebuild 11,000 miles previously and was lowered approx 80mm she also had been treated to a 2 litre bottom end. Went in for her mot and failed (no surprise  ) due to front wheels fouling the bodywork on full lock. replaced the springs with 40mm lowered versions. The ride was dramatically improved but I prefer the old look with the 80mm drop! Then just before christmas disaster struck the number one bearing on the crank failed lunching the crank and number 1 conrod :x . over new year I sourced a 2 litre ABF bottom end. This went to my local engineering firm for a complete rebuild along with the head. Whilst they were refitting the engine and getting it all sorted the dizzy failed blowing the ecu, then the ignition switch failed while the garage was sorting the failed dizzy and ecu adding another problem into the fault finding mix. anyway I finally got her back this week having thrown obscene amounts of money at her. so the old girl is now a 2.0 abf bottom end with kr head and cams, mercedes injectors, modified airbox (although this may get junked for something a little more funky in due course!) plans include:- trip to stealth to set up the old girl once I've run the new engine in with the wur mod done at the same time :D . blue dash and switches with the red lcd mod. exhaust cam mod full grey leather interior 90mm chin spoiler (wanted asap so if you have one cheap pm me!) sort the bodywork (not looking for a20lee standards but straight and all one colour without the bumper scrapes would be nice :D ) and if I come into some real money I'd love to turbo the old girl . still running her in ( only got 100 miles on her since the rebuild ) but she shows promise! due to a distinct lack of funds post rebuild I'm doing all the cheap and cheerful stuff currently.

    fan switch

Cheers Supercharged, that makes sense, I take it it stays closed turning the fan on until the head has cooled sufficiently for the switch to open? ta Whitey
  21. White2505

    fan switch

checked my haynes golf manual already and that only mentions the thermoswitch on the radiator and not this second switch on the end of the head. I've temporarily bodged it with chemical metal :( to hold the tag on the sensor but don't want to rely on it as I'm doing a long journey next week and have only got the car back today after the engine rebuild and really don't want it going bang!
  22. White2505

    fan switch

No problem, I've already been there but unfortunately without knowing what the part is supposed to be called I'll ending spending money on something I don't actually need and end up re-ordering and losing time. Of course being a corrado there's ALWAYS a long list of things I actually DO need so don't really want to buy something that at this stage I don't. :)
  23. White2505

    fan switch

yes I read that, but THAT switch is the three pin jobbie on the bottom of the radiator (if I read correctly) not the sensor on the head.
  24. White2505

    fan switch

I've tried a search but my ineptitude has not got a result. I have a 1.8 16v the pin has broken off the thermo switch which is located on the left hand side (when viewed from the front of the car) engine head near to the airbox. it only has one pin and shorting the wire to earth makes the single electric fan cut in. all the searches suggest the thrmoswitch is on the radiator. I don't want to order the wrong part so does anyone know what this sensor is actually called and have a part number?? thanks Andrew
  25. Doing a few miles an hour over the speed limit in a modern car with an alert driver is no where near as dangerous as someone travelling under the speed limit whilst buggering with their stereo/kids/phone. Its easy pickings for the Police and that is undeniable. I see people jumping red lights every day, people with defective lights/tyres etc etc. Thats what is dangerous, not exceeding the speed limit by a few mph. I don't disagree with you in principle. I have never attended an accident as a result of, or at the location of, a speed camera BUT almost every single accident I do attend (which is nearly daily) is a direct consequence of driver error. This is usually as a result of excess speed for the circumstances (not always in excess of the speed limit for the road but definately in excess of the speed appropriate for the conditions)
