i am in the middle of changing my head gasket on a 93vr6 160.000 miles, i have everything of and i am unsure about a couple of things first to get the chain of the cams, do i need to remove the cams? i hear you can take the sprockets of the end but it is a hard way to do it, the second prob is the chain tensioner pad has worn down and broken at the rivets, can i replace this without removing the gearbox which i really dont want to do thanks Nick

Does anybody have a vag.com with 2+2 connector i could use to speak with my cay? thanks Nick

thanks again it seems it could be so many things, i have a strange sixth sense it is not the head gasket, just seems more electrical type fault but im not sure to be honest, its done 160k burns 1 litre of oil every 500-700 miles, but other than that runs like a dream, well it did, i am wondering weather i should just have a go at taking the head off, checking and cleaning and replacing parts as they come off as im sure it needs some parts to avoid problems in the future, i dont get to drive it as often as i like in and out of london Occasionally so i could live without it for a couple of weeks, i have never taken a head off but i am good with cars have quite a lot of tools, did a mk1 golf 16 valve Conversion years ago, but never a head, must say the timing chain worries me don't really fancy taking the tranny off as it is on the road but i guess these things are always more scary to think of before once i get going i will have no choice, so i guess what i am asking is is it worth it or should i keep looking for a prob before, is it going to cost a fortune is it a Proverbial can of worms? any help at all welcome, lastly does anyone have vag.com in the west london area 2x2 connector? i would love to see what my car has to say for itself? thanks nick

ok i the car is still playing up white smoke smells of petrol quite strong runs rough, did a compression test and got 1=160 2-140 3=160 4=160 5=160 6=160 not sure if that is outside tollerences on 2 cylinder, it has lost a little water which is weird but have just noticed wet passenger foot well, cant imagion it is the materix as have already replaced that could be rain got in. anyway cant think what the smoke is? i guess fueling maybe an injector maybe a sensor, would a head gasket read different on the compression test? any help much appreciated as i cant think what it could be? thanks

i have a 93 2.9 vr6, this morning i drove to the petrol station it drove fine, i filled up but when i left it miss fired and white smoke bellowed out the back, i pulled over and checked the plugs as they oil up as its i suspect its suffering bore wear but still it miss fired and white smoke, i limped home and left it an hour checked the water which had gone down a bit which is unusal but i have not checked it in a while, i topped it up and gave it a try and it was fine drove 5 miles or so and no problems! very weird, i thought head gasket but i cant imagion it would fix itself maybe funny electrics to the injectors? if any one has any idea it would be great as i find it a little hard to trust it at the moment thanks nick

thanks I will have a look at those, may be worth mentioning the occasional smell of fuel like running rich normally, at cold, could be a incorrect mix?!@ and from someone from my home town as well! thanks Nick

no dunk dunk just creaking,, anyone know a good way to see if the top mounts are shot, also is there a good way of telling if various bushes are gone, in the past i have found it hard to tell unless they are of the car, but thats not alot of help, thanks Nick
-
when I steer the wheels especially when not moving so with more resistance, it creaks, it is hard to tell exactly where from, I am thinking the top mounts but they seem ok to look at, any ideas? thanks Nick

i have a 93 vr recently the steering has begun to creak, more to one side than the other and more noticable when slow or stationary ie more resistance, i have noticed a little steering fluid level drop ( from max to min in six months), but am not convinced it is the prob! any one had experience with this, is it good to drive for a while? many thanks Nick

I used Wicked Wheels (0800 0439334) for my 16" BBS Anni rims - they did a brilliant job that has survived being outside all winter. Not cheap at £100/wheel but quality is never cheap! did they do the outside rim in the brushed steel kind of look as the original?
-
i have a set of bbs split rims from a golf anaversary mk3 that need a recon, i want them done properly with the outside rim in the brushed steel look etc, i also have a set of speedlines i want reconing, i am based in london does anyone know any great places? thanks nick

VR6 Cooling questions (Major Breakthrough - Last Page )
nickeboy replied to Goldie's topic in Engine Bay
for the record, since changing my main waterpump it runs at around 80 at 70 on the motorway, 90 if i thrash it! again 80 in town 90 in traffic, and that about it 1&2 fans cut in as and when, i have never heard stage 3 apart from when the conector fell off the fan and i pluged it in again, nick
