Turns out it wasn't the diff. When the oil was drained out it was clean. Changed all wheel bearings - noise still there. Changed the front tyres and all quiet again! Moral of the story - don't move Toyo Proxes T1S from the rear to the front!

Anyone know where I can get a good quality reconditioned / remanufactured gearbox. I know that there will be local "gearbox centre" type places but is there anyone specialising in remanufacturing VW boxes to a good quality rather than to a low price. Looks like the diff in my VR6 is getting noisy (160000 miles) and rather than just open it up and replace the "broken" bits I feel that a complete gearbox would be a better bet due to the mileage and the fact that all of it might be in need of a "freshen up" £1100 + VAT from VW though :( Cheers all
