  1. Well, let's hear it for 74 years olds!!
  2. I had an S1 elise from new. Great rear wheel drive fun in the summer with the roof off (leaks in the rain) basic, connected and light weight Pretty firm in the ride department as you'd guess You'd have to be seriously commited to have as a daily driver!! No abs so need to be careful in the wet as I found out following an interface event with a barbed wire fence Very different to a Corrado obviously but worth a test drive if you can. Paul
  3. ...you'll only end up buying another. Like I did today. :D I bought james28's Dragon Green beauty :luvlove: . Stunning car and a real credit to James. I felt guilty as I drove off, relieving James of his pride and joy, but have pledged to keep her well looked after. I might treat her to a spa weekend at Stealth in the new year, not that anything really needs doing from what I can tell Anyway, wanted to say hello again (I will have to change my name now - any suggestions, hmmmm....) and thank James for being a brilliant, honest and fair seller  Corrado VR6's are the best cars ever. I've had loads of different cars - Lotus Elise, e46 M3, various golfs, an S3,S2, Clio Trophy, Cooper S (turbo) but reckon the C is pretty much my perfect car - it has everything. Might suopplement it with a 911 one day but other than that... Good to be home!! Paul
  4. My C was in Leek a few weeks ago...for a service. There's a brilliant specialist VAG garage there called A&C Vehicle Services - I honestly bet they know most of the VW's you've been seeing. Can't recommend them enough - have been going there for years with my cars. It's about an hours drive each way for me so there must be something in it. Leek's a nice place.
  5. Hi All I'm going to get new tyres all round imminently. I currently have Conti sports 205/50/R15s. I was going to replace with some Pilot Sports although am not 100% decided. My main query is around the speed rating - I'm used to getting Z rated tyres on the sportier cars I've owned. But my current ones aren't, which I was suprised about basedon my previous experience. Any thoughts? Thanks! Paul
  6. I'd be interested to know myself as I have a friend with exactly the same.
  7. Thanks for the tips. Better check my level of cover  If you see a very clean C limping / being towed down the M6 this Saturday morning, give us a beep! Paul
  8. Guess I'll just see how the oil goes down tonight...
  9. Hi All Hoping you can help me out....again....! I'm worried!! I'll try to keep it as brief as possible.... Using coolant due to Headgasket issue on my 92 80,000m VR6 C. I'm off to Stealth for Headgasket and Chains (while they're in there) etc next weekend. Vince said ok to drive (100 miles) provided water temp stays reasonable. He advised bypass of heater matrix "just in case" Bypassed Heater matrix earlier and went out for a test of my work. Temp seemed ok I think and joined pipes still secure - water was 98-108 max. Oil temp hit 116 at one point but came back down again. But towards the end of my journey I got the oil warning beep followed by pretty much constant tapping. :?: :?: Tapping accompanies engine note. Sounds "asthmatic". Drove 1 mile home slowly. By the time I got home both water and oil temp had settled below 100. 20 mins then checked the oil. Muddy black sludge under oil cap and not much to speak of on dipstick. :( Is it that I have forgotten to check the oil with the constant coolant checking? Is this another symptom of the head gasket issue? My plan is to get some oil in there sharpish, hope the rattle goes away, then hopefully drive her down to Stealth. Bad idea?? Really appreciate any help..! Cheers Paul (My headgasket post for what it's worth: http://the-corrado.net/.archive/forum/viewtopic.php?t=53256)
  10. The head work at Stealth includes everything else "necessary" - eg if the head needs machining to make it true that is included. Vince gave me a whole list but I can't remember TBH. Sounded pretty comprehesive to me though. Give them a bell if you want to know for sure. Paul
  11. Yes, 750 + VAT = 881 inc if done as a seperate job from the head gasket. Same as me then. I will get it > £300 cheaper WHEN I get it done at the same time however due to them saving so much labour. The quote for both together inc VAT is 1400 from Stealth currently.
  12. What turned out to be the problem then? He said he wouldn't say definitely one way or the other until he'd seen the chains, but I needed to be prepared to spend the extra if required. I asked if it was his car and he said 'yes'. So between you guys with about 23,000 posts between you and Vince with his expertise, I'll go with your recommendations!!
  13. I'll take some next time I wash her. Paul
  14. Assuming a decent Spring / Summer market. I'm not selling yet but would appreciate your thoughts... 92 K Corrado VR6 Moonlight (ie very dark) blue 80,000 Interior Immaculate - nothing more to say (not leather). Exterior Immaculate - no scratches dings or even stone chips. Everything works (well). Full VW history for all but last service (done at Stealth) Just had Stealth do Head Gasket, Chains, Clutch and all associated work New Plugs Still running on Original Campaign / Monte Carlo alloys Panasonic ICE (6 cd in boot) 2 previous owners. Original unmodified condition. (You can tell it has been garaged for most of it's life by the excellent condition of the seals all round the car). Big neat file of History with every receipt. Honestly doubt you could find a newer feeling / looking and original Corrado. £5,500?
  15. That's my question answered then - much appreciated. Paul
  16. Hi As per my previous post, my car is going into Stealth for a new Headgasket in the next couple of weeks - whilst they're "in there" they said it's sometimes necessary / logical to do the chains. When they do what they need to in order to get to the head gasket, the chains may either fall apart due to age (1992 on 80,000 miles), or look like they've seen better days and it might be adviseable to replace at the same time. The cost of the chains job is about £570 inc (I think that will include a NEW CLUTCH too from what I remember from a conversation with Vince yesterday) if done at the same time or £880 inc if done at a later stage. (If I did get NEED to get them done at a later stage I would probably get them done at Stealth so a special trip down there from Manchester, add another £nn inconvenience factor for day off work or possibly train etc) For info I think I'll be doing 5,000 - 7,500 a year. Would appreciate your thoughts on whether: a) I should just get them done at the same time regardless b) This would be overkill if a visual check of the chains shows they're still reasonable FYI I imagine I will be keeping the car for the forseeable future (ie 2 years at least). So.......what do you think? Thanks
  17. Ok. I spoke to Vince at Stealth and he reckons it should be ok to drive down as long as the temperature stays reasonable. Booked in for a week of TLC down there in 10 days time. Headgasket etc. Paul
  18. Ok...not good news. Just spoke to the garage and the gunk didn't work. They pulled out the plug from cylinder #1 and said it looks like it's starting to be steam cleaned which indicates coolant going into the cylinder, so it looks like the head definitely needs looking at. All according to the garage. I asked if I should driving and they said not as I could cause significant further damage (not over heating currently I don't believe). The garage is happy for me to leave it with them, but to be honest with this type of work I would really like to get the car to Stealth (who see a lot more VR6 Corrado's than your average VW specialist I suspect). But I am in South Manchester - sounds like it wouldn't be wise to drive 100 miles? Any thoughts? Low loader to Stealth £? Cheers Paul
  19. FYI New secdondary water pump from VW (no discount) is £92 inc. Paul
  20. I was assuming a plug was getting doused with coolant but will keep in mind about the leads - is this a common thing on earlier models? Cheers
  21. Thanks Iain - I'll try leaving something on the floor which is more likely to show up any damp. I don't think it's rainwater as the seals all seem pretty good and it happens in the cold / dry. Sounds like definitely need a new Aux coolant pump then...I'll get onto it. Cheers
  22. Hi I haven't noticed wet carpets - I will check though. The reason I changed the expansion tank was that there was always a bit of liquid resting on the ledge half way down the outside of the tank - thought it might be leaking. The garage who changed it showed me the old one and there was a trail from the hole in the side (presumably the pressure relief?) so it was clearly some coming from here. The new tank is always dry on the outside :) but the car is still supping coolant at the same rate :( Cheers
  23. Thanks for the quick response vr6storm. What sort of price to sort a replacement aux water pump do you think (fitted)? Sounds like it must be quite a common thing with you making such a positive ID from my description - I worry slightly that the VW "specialist" I am taking it to currently didn't diagnose that! FYI I'm on a distributor BTW. I'll look for a leak arounf the thermo housing.
  24. Hi All Not really posted that much before but I would really appreciate your help as my car seems to be suffering at the moment. I think I'm getting there, and I don't mind spending the money to get it sorted by someone decent but would appreciate your thoughts on what's related and what's not and anything I haven't considered in the list of problems below.....here goes...: - Drinking about a litre of coolant a day (in a total of around 45 mins driving). - Has been pressure tested but no leaks (though this was a while ago when the car was getting through coolant at 1.5L's per 2 weeks) - Expansion tank checked for exhaust fumes at the same juncture - was normal - There are still no obvious external leaks now. - Expansion tank and cap changed but no improvement - Once running there is a bubbling sound emminating from behind the centre of the dash - When I leave the car after a run it steams up from back window forwards - There is a whirring sound accompanying the engine note - this really started with the damp / cold towards the end of last year - Also (related to above point I think) when it's very cold there is an extra loud whirring accompanying the engine note as I drive off for the first minute. - Starting to misfire from cold (has only been doing this in the past week) - Still pulls superbly even with the leak (although haven't tried since the misfire) - No 'mayo' under oil cap - Some steam / white smoke from exhaust - Water temp - Also, I noticed yesterday that if the key is turned to the first postion in the ignition (not really warmed up though) I can hear a bubbling coming from the engine bay behind the dash (and if I hold the pipe marked A, I can feel it too). At the same time I can also hear a buzzing emminanting from the area marked B and if I hold another pipe around here again I can feel a 'bubbling'. - New Symptom this morning - some steam coming from radiator region (well, under front lip in engine bay) - Fuel consumption seems to have taken a dive - 18-19 MPG? Then again this could just be a red herring and be a result of never getting above 40. From the advice I've sought and from what I've seen on here it sounds like Headgasket (coolant use, misfire, exhaust steam), possibly heater matrix (steamy windows), maybe water pump (whirring). There are lots of symptoms which probably need seperating here but they all seem to have happened at the same time and there could possibly be a relationship from my basic understanding so I thought I would list them all in case it helps. The next thing I am planning (tomorrow) is to have the coolant system flushed and then the use of a K gel type liquid (it's called Car go Liquid metal or something like that) overnight then flushing and refilling with regular coolant. It has come recommended by one of the garages I have been using and at £10 I thought it was worth a shot - promises to seal cracks / head gaskets permanently). Also, am I doing the car any harm by using it for my 8 mile commute each day while I get to the route of this?? I always keep the coolant level up with the correct mix (I am getting through G12plus at a bottle a week). Apologies for any dumbness in any of the above... Thanks in advance for any useful thoughts you might have...... :?: :?: :?:
