I will check that too but I dont think that there are any signs of this being the case. Its a right odd one this! Thanks

I have fitted a replacement whole unit which incorporates the resistor and the fan is working again, although its sounding a bit sick! - Assuming I have not been sold a lemon, what else could it be which is causing my blower to make some very unusal noises and not work smoothly and efficiently? Thanks

Investigated my wet passenger footwell today and the rub mat / thingy under the carpet was soaked, so I removed this completely and its had it as just falling apart. Replaced with a tcloth and will keep close on eye on to see how long it takes to get sodden again. Windows have not steamed up at all today although not had any rain. I have checked all the other suggestions on here and all seems fine. Maybe previous owner had a problem but never removed what I have today disposed of? Being to think that maybe it is not the heater matrix, although I think im gonna bypass it anyway just to be on the safe side. Anything else it could be? Thanks

Thanks for your advise, I will check all this out tomorrow if i get chance. Col

Hi The coolant level appears to be fine and I cant smell anything untoward from inside the car. If the matrix is on its way out, I guess the coolant level should be dropping to reflect the water in the car?

HI Last few weeks after rain, I have noticed the windows steaming up, sometimes very bad indeed, so Im guessing this is the heater matrix about to give up the ghost? The passenger footwell is also very wet, so can it be anything else? I know from reading various posts on this topic that the heater matrix can be bypassed but with Winter very nearly upon us, I guess that this is not an option if I want any kind of warmth in the car. Car is fine when weather is dry though as I tend to have the blower on a low setting on coldest temperature. Please confirm my worse fears! Col

I guess the new unit is my best option. I have emailed someone that previously tried to sell the blower unit on ebay although I dont think he managed to sell it. I will probably do the resistor again as well then as it seems to make sense. Watch this space! Col

Time to reserect this post, my fan has only just started working on speed 4 again only. Assuming the resistor is ok, what else could it be please? Thanks
-
Im sure its outside and its only when im parking that its noticeable. Would just like to know what it could be so I can decide whether its worth getting it sorted or not.

its certainly a weird one, my car feels much more responsive now although I dont think its any quicker overall. I thought it was just my previous relay dodgy connector but if Roger has noticed the difference too, there must be something in it. I wonder how many of you will now change your 167 relay to see if it changes the characteristics of your cars too??

Cheers Dic but its definately not a squeeling noise. Its a rubbing noise so dont think its power steering related. Maybe steering column? Anybody else?
-
Hi I have a bog standard VR6 which I have owned for a couple of months now. When parking, there is a strange rubbing noise coming from the steering which is only there when the steering is turned. Its not noticable once on the move but its there whenever I park. Is is likely to be the power steering, CV joints or what? Any ideas will be greatly received. Thanks Col

Update time - bought new resistor from maplins today for 71p and have just fitted it. Thanks to your thorough instructions, it was easy until I got to the point of removing the old resistor, which took an age but its done now and working on all 4 speeds again. Well that must have saved me 60 quid or so in labour, so Im very happy, thanks very much. Regards Col

Roger - it is bottom right, should have number 167 on it if its the genuine one. Let me know if you notice any perceivable difference.
-
Im also intrigued to know! - If I took you out in it now, you would not recognise it as the same car, I hope it stays like this. For the sake of £8, you might wanna try changing yours also. I have a replacement ECU one also but I have not fitted it yet as car is running very nice at the mo. At least the MAF seems to be fine anyway, and the tickover is also very smooth again. - My current relay switch did have a loose terminal , so maybe that had something to do with the running?

Great stuff, cheers guys, looks like a job for the w/e although as mine is 94 model, will definately check the last info before dismantling everything. Col

easy to fix or job for a mechanic? - Any idea how much the part is also? - Strange, as its been fine until tonight when I chnaged the fuel relay?
-
HI I have just fitted a new fuel pump relay which appears to have cured my hesitation problems but the blower will only work on Speed 4 now? Whats does this mean? - Ive checked the fuse and thats fine - suggestions please! Thanks
-
Thanks guys, I will get a couple of new ones and see whether I notice any difference.
-
I have just found that one of the metal connectors on the fuel relay 167 is loose( compared with the others) - could this be the culprit for the hesitation across the rev range most of the time? How much is a new one of these? worth changing the ECu at the same time. Whats the correct number for ECU also. So many questions...sorry!
-
tRied alternative MAF, did not run any better althouh tickover may have been a bit smoother. What does that leave then, CPS, fuel relay...
-
thanks for that. Mines made in Portugal as oppose to Germany - what difference would this make..im guessing that it would mean that mine is not a genuine VW part? does it really matter??
-
which one is the fuse relay on the 94 vr6. Fuse box is on drivers side, and the fuse numbers seem different also?

Mine is a Beru, so far so good. I paid £130 inc vat. No longer sounds like a scooby.
