  1. Guys, Thanks very much for all your help and kind words! Still not heard anything but the police say its quite common they catch someone with dna evidence and all that now, they just need to have smoked in the car apparently! until then I only hope the insurance comes through ok, i have already started scouring the classifieds for another rado! Again, thanks and will keep you posted!! Stu
  2. Hey, My house was broken into, they took my wallet (and worse) car keys and drove off in my corrado. Its reg N990XAU, mystic blue storm. Stolen in the early hours of Thursday morning from Lincoln. The police are "looking" for it but not heard anything yet. Just letting you know, maybe keep your eyes open incase you spot it in a car park or something. And also to warn you to sleep with your car keys under your pillow because it is apparently common at the moment for these "Hanoy Burglars" to break into a house just to take the car keys. Be warned! Will let you know if there is any news. Stu Unhappy and carless :pale:
  3. Thats cool, cheers! I will just go ahead with the sand, prime, paint then. Thanks for your help dudes Stu
  4. alright people, Had grilled pigeon for lunch last week but unfortunately en route to my radiator, he took out half my grill. My mechanic got a new one from vw but it came in black plastic (needs sanding, priming then painting) and VW insist they dont do one primed and ready for painting. Anyone have any experience with this subject? Should i just go ahead and paint the black one he got? Cheers much
  5. duh, how stupid i see what you mean now. by splices i mean teeth. its like they are supposed to match up. but now you mentioned the broad cone im not sure i remeber that part. could this be causing my problem? hmmm i will take that list to my mechanic and see if everything is as it should be. thanks for your help stu
  6. hey thanks for the reply... i would take some pics, dont have a chance to jack her up tho to get the top mounts off for a few days. splices? is that like a washer? my mechanic mentioned possibly fabricating a washer but wanted to find the right part for the job. im sure the bearing is sitting straight on top of the strut at the mo. :? soz i cant be more helpful stu
  7. Arlight, i went ahead and bought some new fangled top mounts with bearings (costing 53 quid all in  ) and they still dont seem to be the right ones. where can i get the right ones? any help gratefully recieved, this is driving me up the wall!!! :? i have searched this and There seems to be a common theme but i cant quite pin down my paricular problem. Cheers again stu
  8. G'day people! I am having a small issue with my recently fitted coilovers. I bought these second hand from someone on this forum who had them on the same model but they appear to not fit mine 100%. They are on the car, but there seems to be something not right with the front top mount assembly. The shocker top bearings that i have got have splices on them but they dont seem to be matching up with the splices on top of the strut which causes a kind of clunky/grindy/ping when loaded up in a corner or parking with some lock on. It could be two things: either i have the wrong shocker top bearings or there is something missing from the assembly. Other than that they seem to be ok. Anyone have any clues? Has anyone else had this issue? Also, where can you get parts for the Koni's (the website is in dutch!) Stu
  9. update:: old callipers dics and pads are back on!!! :( turns out that although the 288s seemed to fit ok there was far too much pedel travel. perhaps due to the master cylander being old so i had to re-fit the old ones. these are working fine, although there is still a bit of travel in the pedal before braking starts. for future reference:::: make sure you know what bits are supposed to go on before you buy cheap second hand bits. in the long run cheap is expensive and expesive is cheap! cheers for all your help. untill next time...... :D
  10. So, thus far the calipers are on ok and some 288 discs off a golf 3 seem to fit correctly. anyone want a set of octavia discs? i take it i will have to take it easy at first to let the pads settle with the discs? cheers for all the advice people peace
  11. ah, right i see! dunno i am going down now to see whats happening. will check the discs are correct!!!! cheers man stu
  12. well, it could be. but im sure the left one is wrong too. stu b
  13. yeah mee too, i thort they were coming off a golf and assumed they were the same. they have the vw stamp on them (lucas). is it worth b@stardising them to make them fit?
  14. alight everyone. i posed the question recently, "will some 288mm callipers and discs fit on my vr" i had a few responses saying they would, so i picked up a second hand set off a skoda vrs. after i painstakingly painted them black, my pet techy was supposed to be fitting them today (along with my konis! ) trouble is he has just called me and said that they dont fit. He claims he can get them to fit by grinding a bit here and there and adding a few washers. whats going on here? i had a few people saying they should bolt straight on. any help/info will be gratefully recieved stu b peace
  15. today i fitted a new (beru) coil pack (115 from gsf) and leads ( beru also)as i was suffering a nasty intermittent misfire. i got all the info i needed off this forum and happilly went about replacing both items with minimal fuss. on examining the old coil pack it had several cracks and was damp. turns out there is a leak coming from the aux electric water pump which has been getting into the coil obviously! now interestingly...... the coil pack and leads both had VAG markings on them, could they have been in there since new??? the motor has done 110k now! the leads are black and i thought the original leads were red?? anyway, cured the misfire and after reading some of the threads i might have a crack at changing the pump next weekend. (i used a piece of speedtape to prevent the water getting into my shiny new coilpack!!!) peace word up
  16. nice one, thanks for the advice but i think i will just stick to the standard rear setup. with the 288s up front that should give me plenty stopping power for what i need. thanks for all the advice from everone peace word up
  17. cheers guys, i will go ahead and buy them then :D . while we are at it, i will be needing rear brakes and bearings. my pet tech mentioned that they come as one unit, is this right? can i get bigger rear discs? i know they dont really do much braking but they will look puny next to my phat 288s  ! plus opinion please: should i leave my new calipers red or get them painted black?? :?: cheers peace stu
  18. alright, sorry if im stomping on old ground but...... i have been offered a set of second hand 288mm front discs, pads, and calipers for a decent price. They appear to be the same as the ones off a golf turbo. Questions a. Will these fit under my solitudes? b. Will i need any other parts? c. Is this the real life? d. Is this just fantasy? peace, cheers
  19. mine has had a new rear quarter and it seems to have been done quite well. so as the guys above said, it can be done. bad luck with the bump! hope you get it sorted soon peace word up
  20. i have the throbbing in most gears but nothing too bad. interested in the vibration. mine has quite a rough vibration when pulling off. not noticed the gearstick moving though. as with previous complaints, it is intermittent and i only notice it the odd time. I put it down to my bad clutch control. maybe its something else. its a proper love affair aint it. you think you have found the perfect one. then there is loads of tiny little things that start to really annoy you that you want to change! thats the fun i guess!!! peace
  21. pefect timing people. i have the old "only blowing on 4 " problem too. i will try the knob thing tonight. peace word up
  22. cheers stuartfzr400 i will be making as much use of this forum and the vast experience as possible. it seems i have some possible problems already.... but i will save them for another thread and the local VW specialist!!! peace
  23. yep, you also appear to be right! i put on some firestones in 205/50/15 and i feel much better (down to the wire on front offside!) still really wet round here so looking forward to a dry day to test them out! cheers again!
  24. i checked this out and you appear to be right. i guess my options are put it back to how it should be or get the bump stops cut? wow, its great how im planning on spending money that i dont have!!!
  25. wow those were some quick responses!! thanks very much, i will see about putting on 205's. there is a better choice it seems. it wont make too much of a difference tho, will it? about the high rear, im not sure whats been done there, i will look into it. thanks again, good bunch of lads it seems!
