My bog standard 1.8 16V needs sexing up - please help!
kvwloon replied to Dancing Fish's topic in Members Gallery
Yep, agreed, that as well, - later grille, Kamei copy eyebrow spoiler, job done! -
Damn it, knew writing Karmann wasn';t right somehow. Now I know why, meant to say Kamei eyebrow spoiler, not Karmann! Same as chrishill's above, recommended! 8)
-
Think Karmann do a nice one for about £80, but can get decent fibreglass copies for about £20 unpainted. Very nice improvement in my opinion. I can post a pic later when get home if you like of my £20 job fitted which I picked up from North Weald a few years ago.

Personally, as a fellow 16 valver, I'd say keep it fairly standard in the wheels /suspension department. Probably hold it's value better in the long term. Judging by the piccies she looks good to me as is. If you want to instantly sex her up without too much expense how about a nice colour coded eyebrow spoiler? -
AndyVR6, Didn't cost much to fix, only involves dropping out the rear strut, unbolting the nut above the plate etc and replacing the upper spring plate (these seem to corrode readily), and refitting rear strut. DIY job, don't even need spring compressors for the rear as I recall. Spring plates are only about £12 each, one per strut. Worth getting new nut as well as will probably be corroded to hell if the plate is. Let us know if that's the problem, Gold Star for me if it is!

Wasn't one of these on Ebay last week.....? Red 16v
-
vr6storm, Yep, tend to agree. Additionally the one I saw today was soft Connolly leather in great colour, and in near perfect nick. Could give me something nice to sob against if I proceed with the purchase and the autobox packs in!
-
Storm, Yep, it's all you list, minus and plus, but without aircon. The leather however I would say is worth more than 'normal' leather. Engine is Oettinger. Don't know what to say at moment, cogs are whirring in head again!
-
Thanks all. If anyone else can pitch in with a 'yep, I know what causes that, it's # seal, at # price that would be good! Otherwise, thanks all, will deffo get it checked out more thoroughly
-
Thanks guys, it's all helping! I'll keep you posted.
-
Cheers guys, will deffo get that leak professionally looked at before handing over the hard-earned.
-
MoonlightVR, Cheers, I agree. I actually liked driving an Auto for a change, and on kick-down it sure as hell shifts well, otherwise cruises nicely. The only thing niggling me now is the autobox leak, see my other thread today for more details. Asking price with new tyre, back box and engine leak sorted is 5.5k..... good/bad price?! Depends on the autobox leak situation I guess!
-
Well, this is the Scotts / Oettinger car I've been looking at today. Thanks for the pointer, anyone else got any ideas! I have agreed to pay 5.5k. Am I perhaps being foolish. Personally I thought a fair price given the cars apparent spec rarity and 71k mileage, however, the agreement is subject to a few bits being professionally sorted, the paperwork checking out and identifying what the score is with the autobox leak, so not too late to give it a miss yet. Drove perfeclty though, and sounded sweet all round. My instinct is that the guy was genuine, and that if he knew of the leak he would have removed the evidence prior to me taking a look at it. Car was recently serviced so could have been a service f#ck up!? Arrgh, having a crisis of confidence!
-
vr6storm, Ah, now your asking! I've accepted buying in principle subject to everything checking out OK, and as yet haven't seen all the original paperwork detailing the work (at this point thinking you must all be thinking 'hmnn'! Apparently however it was about 20k new, with 11k additional work by Scotts / Oettinger, this was Oettinger bodykit / wheels / exhaust, lowering, Connolly leather interior. Engine work apparently takes it to 219BHP. I'll let you know what I find out, but wil check it all before handing the readies over, at which point I'll probably do my usual and think, did I pay too much etc etc. Especially after reading about Storm Autos being less desirable / valuable. Is this true?! Anyway, I do know I like it! So that's the main thing, isn't it, it is , isn't it , right....? I'm guessing that it's too unusual to judge by normal market values,???

Crazymarcel, Cheers, will be nice to finally join the VR club! Just hope I can afford it....ah well, can't take it with you! It seems sound, with a few bits to get it up to standard. Took it for a '20 minute spin', came back an hour later...nice drive! Did put some petrol in to be fair, got a feeling I'll be doing that more often. My only concern at the mo is a leak from the autobox, other than that, and bank manager willing, shel'l be mine  Yep, plate will be getting transferred as soon as possible. Hope to see you all soon at Wagon. Thanks for reminding me about Woburn...

This might seem slightly off the wall, but it's exactly what I had..... and it turned out to be the rear spring upper plates had corroded right through on one side, giving an unintentional 10mm ride drop at the rear and an annoying and mystifying squeek as the spring top moved against the bodywork it was now resting on! Easy way to tell is shine a torch or feel under the top of the rear wheel arches and check that the spring plates on top of the top of the springs are in good condition and that there is a finger sized gap between the plate and the bodywork. A quick and easy check and worth a quick look, might just be the cause?

Well, have agreed in principle to buy a nice 71k Auto VR today, subject to a few things being sorted. One thing I picked up on was a leak apparent on the top of the autobox, and was after some advice about it before I complete the transaction as not overly familiar with the Auto box or VR engine. Basically, towards the centre of the engine bay, on top and inwards from the box dipstick there was fresh autobox fluid. On the dipstick the box seemed overfilled, and way above the upper dot on the dipstick so I'm hoping this is the cause in the oil finding it's way out elsewhere. Before test drive I cleaned off the fluid, but on my return there was more appearing. It seemed to be coming out of two round bits with an allen key in the centre on top of a flat alloy section. Any ideas anyone, advance warning of failure etc, easy to fix? Sorry about the crap desription of the location :? Any advice much appreciated before I hand over the money!

Just called an ex car sprayer friend of mine. Apparently what VW / Insurers propose should be fine in his opinion, I wouldn't worry, and accept the work proposed personally! Knowing insurers if you persist they might just say OK, wel'l have to write the car off then, and offer you a paltry amount for it. P.S Don't you just love the recent car insurance adverts based on Charlies Angels.....'Our man saved a LOT of money insuring with us....so lets see what else we can do...' Yeah, coz we all know how much Insurance companies just love lashing out money to people after a claim

Hmmm, can't beleive Hammond would have done himself so much potential damage to his 'cool'? image by doing what he did for a laugh. As said, seems to work for some not others......
-
Thanks for the comments all, turns out it IS indeed an Oettinger Auto VR6, and all being well will be mine soon! :D Looking forward to driving 'her' again, not looking forward to the inevitable bills!
-
vr6storm, Could be a good point. Shouldn't be too shot though at 71k mileage. Would prob keep the valver as a back-up car anyway :D
-
Oh sh#t, think I'm gonna have to buy it regardless of being able to afford it or not! This will be the first place to post the pics of it, that's for sure. :D
-
..yeah, and the 'er, this bit makes it get hotter, er, I think, er...!' waving hand vaguely near the demister vents, brilliant! Thought he was going to blub when Clarkson crashed his toy electric car in to Hammonds 'real' Porsche pedal car. 'But, it's the first new car I've ever bought, and youv'e dented it,.... sniff' Magic
-
vr6storm, Cheers, think it's more likely me who's confused, and it's probably a valver (which is fine with me). However, it does have Connolly leather, and an autobox (which I have never heard of with a 16v!) Will just have to take a look I guess, not too decided at the moment :?

A20 LEE, Was the one at Inters for £7k a dark purple one by any chance, L reg? Gonna take another look tomorrow, but several things worrying me, primarily insurance costs and future trouble finding spares etc. Don't know if insurers will know what it is and hugely increase the cost etc. Heart over head decision proving a bit difficult so any advice appreciated. Also occurs to me, not sure it was a VR engine after all, but will take proper look at car tomorrow......
