1.8 16v | Tornado Red | Edinburgh Price: £500 Description: 1990 VW Corrado 1.8 16V for sale in Tornado Red for £500 ONO. No tax or MOT so sold as spares/repairs (drives but will need trailered away due to this). I have owned for ~17 months and added ~10,000 miles in that time - now on ~139,000 miles. Full VW service history until 111,000 miles (timing belt replaced during this service). A previous owner had it lowered ~70mm but I swapped for stock suspension (springs & dampers + 4-wheel alignment) so I could actually drive around town - ride is significantly improved now but I still have the lowered suspension and will include in the sale. Only other modifications are Scorpion exhaust, 15" diamond-cut Estoril alloys, K&N panel filter and tinted windows (all by previous owners other than air filter). Used almost daily for the first 12 months of my ownership but has been sitting since MOT expired in the summer. Selling as I do not need a car any more and have no time to work on it. The most noticeable issue is that the power steering pump needs replaced. The previous owner was using red ATF fluid rather than the correct green CHF11 fluid. This has affected the steering rack seals and resulted in damage to the power steering pump. This may only require new steering rack seals and pump, but I had the opportunity to buy a full second hand rack/pump/pipes set, which I will include in the sale. The front suspension bushes and ARB drop-links need replaced, probably due to increased wear from the lowered suspension used by the previous owners. I also suspect the thermostat is stuck and should be replaced. Spares included in sale: second hand steering rack, pump & pipes; rubber roof trim; alternator; alternator belt; brake pads; front & rear lowered suspension (springs & dampers); genuine Corrado floormats. Features: * Unmodified 136bhp 1.8l 16V 4-cylinder KR engine * Rare oil pressure and battery voltage dials fitted * Electric sunroof (tilts and slides) * Electric spoiler (raises/lowers on interior switch but not speed sensor) * Heated wing mirrors * Black cloth interior in good condition * Clifford immobiliser * Pioneer stereo with USB port & 6x9 JBL speakers on parcel shelf * Nearly new Kumho KU31 185/55 tyres on front; Dunlop Eagle F1 GS-D2 on back * Nearly new front & gearbox engine mounts Bad points: * New power steering rack & pump required (second hand rack, pump & pipes included in sale) * New front bushes and drop-links required * Suspect new thermostat required * Rust on front o/s wheel arch (holed outer layer) and on rear bumper * Brakes need work after sitting since MOT expiry * Problem with mechanical speed sensor affecting some trip computer functions and automatic raise/lower of electric spoiler (new set of clocks would fix) * Electric windows intermittent * Central locking does not work * Alloys need refurbished * Poor paintwork and some dents in places - could do with a respray * Bolster wear to driver's seat

I'll take the 1.8 clocks. I'm actually heading down to Birmingham (well, Telford) this weekend so can pick them up at some point? Will be there Sat-Mon.

Dark blue (I think) M-reg VR6 on the A1 near Newcastle yesterday afternoon. Traded places for a while but I was in convoy with a mate so couldn't play much...

Haha loving the Micra mate - I drove one of those to Mongolia a few years ago! Weren't driving quite like that though -
Haha, a good decision! Enjoy the trip - let us know how you get on!
-
Hmm really?? How about I have that one and you have my 'project' valver?
-
I used cartakeback.com when I was shifting my old Clio. Not suggesting it's a suitable end for a Corrado by any means but they quoted me £200 and gave me the same on pickup. No £50 admin charge either!

Anyone going to Download this year? Lineup coming together nicely! http://fido.apps.ln-trust.com/publishing/content/h/g/e/poster-800.png

Breaking 1992 Corrado 2.0 16v - Prices Lowered To Clear!
<neil> replied to pettsy's topic in Cars for Breaking
Any idea if the radiator cover fits an early 1.8l? -
Interesting, I assumed the same - will check my plugs!
-
Fixed dipped headlights - previous owner left resistor connected when fitting new loom. Also took spoiler to bits as one side was loose - could push up and down by hand. The main bit of plastic pipe is snapped so had to leave it for now...

Haha amazing!

Wow, they look awesome! I've got the same ones but absolutely knackered - bad DIY refurb with laquer flaking off and corrosion underneath. I'll have to pay for a pro job to recover them I think.

Yeah, good advice. I'm happy to work through problems as well - great cars to build up my maintenance knowledge! As much as I love owning my valver, I guess I just think it's more worthwhile to be working on getting a VR6 in good condition than a valver. I went with a valver initially because the thought of running a 2.9l VR6 sounded painfully expensive, but with mine running like it is at the moment I'd actually get about the same if not better with a VR6! Have to accept that if I do stick with the valver and get all the mechanicals and electrics working and chose to tidy it up with a respray and refurbed alloys, I'm unlikely to ever make that money back.

Hi folks - looking for some thoughts / advice on where I'm better spending my money! My valver was in a bit of a state when I bought it last July: in dire need of a service, gearbox & front engine mounts bust, red PSF instead of green, very low suspension with disintegrated bump stops, leaking windscreen, bad DIY paintjob and alloy refurb. In hindsight, I should have been more patient and waited for something in better nick but my old Clio was dead and I was keen to replace it with a Corrado. :bonk: Anyway, I've fixed up a few bits and pieces myself over the last few months (learning experience more than anything else as I'm new to car maintenance): stock suspension fitted, engine mounts replaced, coolant flush, PSF flush, brakes & clutch bled, oil & filter change, leaking oil pressure switch replaced, new air filter, some engine bay rewiring, new front tyres. Now I'm faced with a couple of bigger jobs that will cost a fair bit - the power steering rack & pump are knackered, probably due to the red PSF. I'd get that done at a garage rather than doing it myself and while they've got the subframe dropped anyway, I'll get them to change wishbones, droplinks, ARB bushes and ball joints as they're all gubbed too. Also the thermostat as I think it's leaking. The second big job is the heater matrix. I thought it was fine when I bought it but since using it more over the winter, I've noticed the passenger footwell getting suspiciously damp. Oh and it also sounds like one of my hydraulic tappets is clicking away... So three big jobs. And a bunch of minor things like central locking & electric windows (not the fuse), no speed reading to MFA & spoiler, bad fuel economy around town and still the horrendous paint work, alloys and leaking windscreen... :? Although I'm not keen to abandon the valver without sorting all these problems out, I'm starting to think it would be a better idea to buy a VR6 in better condition and invest in that instead. For example, TCS have one with only 81k on the clock and two previous owners that would be a good candidate and they'd do part exchange on mine... There's also a couple for sale by forum members that are undoubtedly a much better starting point than mine. What do you think? I know it's more personal preference than anything else but it just seems a waste of money to try and resurrect the valver when it has so many negatives and I could get a better car in much better condition for less than I'm likely to spend on the valver?

Argh, that's tempting... Just at the stage where I need to replace a load of stuff on my 1.8 and thinking I'd be better spending money on a VR6 instead! And I'm down in Portsmouth in a couple of weeks... Feel like I'd be giving up on poor Florence though, just as she's starting to get fixed up a bit!

I'm running rich at the moment too - one of my mates was cycling behind me one day and nearly suffocated I think My plugs are clean though and I seem to get good mpg on long runs, just very poor around town. Useful to know about the cold start valve - I'll check that out. Was disappointed to learn that my KR won't work with VAG-COM - would have made diagnosing a bit easier!
-
* Fitted new Febi front engine mount - old one totally dead * Bled brakes - couple of blocked nipples so guessing it's the first time they'd been done for a while. Turns out the load proportioning valve's really stiff and been hooked up with a bent bit of coat hanger such that there's no rear brake action when the pedal's pressed! Probably adjusted by previous owner when lowered suspension was fitted but now I've got stock on I'll need to get the standard linkage. * Rewired oil pressure gauge as wire in the engine bay had separated somehow and was maxing out the gauge, which freaked me out a bit! * Replaced ignition coil ground wiring as one was split * Tried to get VAG-COM going then did a bit of reading on here and realised it won't work with my 1.8 :(

New Kumho KU31s fitted on the front to replace barely legal Eagle F1 GSD2s with bad uneven wear on the o/s from previous owner's badly aligned lowered suspension. Was tempted to replace with more F1s but decided to be sensible and save money for all the other work that needs done!

Welcome - sounds like a fun project! Whereabouts in Edinburgh are you? If you see a beat up looking tornado red 16V around town, that'll be me...
-
Quote me too if Turborado's not interested please rodmax!
-
Aye, me too please! Mine's soaked in oil from various previous leaks, half falling off and generally pretty rank...
-
Replace PAS rack & pump, new thermostat, bleed brakes, new disks & pads maybe, refurb alloys, new front tyres, fix central locking & electric windows, sort out headlight wiring (no sidelights atm), find out why majority of MFA functions aren't reading, fix oil pressure gauge, sort leaking windscreen, fix spoiler, new exhaust hangers, new front engine mount, new throttle cable, new heater bypass valves / copper pipe. Passenger footwell's soaking wet since I've started using the heater more in the cold weather so suspect I'll need a new heater matrix too :( Try to convince myself that the head gasket's not on the way out... Or maybe just find myself a VR6 in good nick to spend my time and money on instead of a knackered 16V!
