Wierd plastic thing on my oil pump

i just took off my oil pan and discoverd a plastic thing on the oil pump.All i'm wondering is if that thing is really important,and if yes than how much are they and what is it called?

It is called a baffle in VW speak. It stops the oil from running away from the pickup during cornering. I should consider it it essential as oil surging can total your engine. Low oil level no baffle, oil pressure coming and going. Eventually something will nip up.

 

They go brittle with heat/age, if you bust it get a new one. I have an unbroken 16V one in my garage if needed.

I had to get rid of mine when I put the shrick on, I couldnt get it off in less than around 10 million pieces! Dont take it off until you have a replacement!

They are still available, but only from VAG... IIRC it was about £25 for the baffle... 8)

 

Your old one WILL break if you try and take it off and refit it to a new pump...
