stevemac 0 Posted November 7, 2004 Not really a difficult job to do - only potential problem is removing the rear caliper carrier bolts. They're allen bolts & can be difficult to remove. :? If you need new ones - the VW part number is N0199123

Not sure if it would be possible to fit a standard bolt - not much room to get a socket over the bolt head to tighten/loosen it.
DGL 0 Posted November 8, 2004 I had my rear discs, pads and wheel bearings replaced about 1000 miles ago - by a garage as I could not get the caliper bolts undone - and the offside rear has started to rumble. Today as I drove out of the car park at work, over a some speed humps, the car gave out three or four really loud short cheeeeeeeep noises. Sounded like metal on metal. Took the car into a Kwikfit (staffed by very helpful Corrado enthusiasts) who put it up on the lift but we could see nothing wrong, no sign of anything rubbing anywhere, no leaks from the shocks, all the bushes and bearings in place, no obvious problems. Then I read the post from Monoboy. Is there anything other than the wheel bearings that makes loud high pitched noises? Rumbling I didn't mind, but rear wheel steering round the M25..... no I think not! Cheers
stevemac 0 Posted November 8, 2004 DGL, Get your car checked by a VW specialist, instead of the helpful "enthusiasts" at quick-fit. Welcome to the forum m8. 8)
bighands 0 Posted November 10, 2004 Right! rear caliper bolts, no prob! but 2 of the 4 bolts holding the stub axle on, snapped  What the hell do i do! There is about 5-7mm of one sticking out, and 2mm of the other, so now i have a car with 3 wheels and no way of getting it anywhere! can i drill em out or something? gunna put 4 new bolts in 2, there were a weird size! had 2 hammer a 9/16's i think over the top! 15mm slipped off 2 Sorry to keep it in this post kinda going off original subject but easyer than starting a new one! IF THIS WAS ANY OTHER CAR IT WOULD OF BEEN GONE A LONG TIME AGO!!!!!!!
bighands 0 Posted November 10, 2004 Ok been looking about and suggested that if i drill a hole and beat in a allen key this might work? bad idea or not?
stevemac 0 Posted November 10, 2004 Ok been looking about and suggested that if i drill a hole and beat in a allen key this might work? bad idea or not? Multi-spline key would be better. Tap the offending studs with a hammer to loosten them. If the head has completely sheared off - the remaining threads will no longer be tight & should unscrew with comparative ease. If they dont, you'll need to heat them with a blowtorch.
bighands 0 Posted November 10, 2004 cool, will get ma dads blow torch tomorrow, where do i get and whats a multi spline key?!? like a star attachmet? Have given them good soaking with wd40 tonight, will i be able 2 get the new bolts over the counter same day? would GSF do them as i gotta go there tomorow anyway? And what do i do if all this fails?!?!?! got a feeling it might, cos they are proper rusted in!
stevemac 0 Posted November 10, 2004 I doubt we'll do the bolts, but it'll be worth asking your local branch. If the old bolts still won't come out - they're not hot enough. Heat them until they glow red. Multi spline key is very similar to a star attachment.
bighands 0 Posted November 10, 2004 Nice will do, u mean the bolt or the surrounding metal? would of thought umean the surrounding metal so it expands away from the remaining bolt? Cheers for ya help fella, your life saver!
