emmafwa 0 Posted November 5, 2004 Ok I'm finally fed up of running out of petrol !!!! My petrol gauge doesnt work, when the tank is full the gauge says its full, but after about 30 miles is says its empty. Has anyone had the same problem, do you think its a lose wire or faulty sensor ???? Any help will be great, thanks!
Henny 0 Posted November 5, 2004 sounds like the sensor has either become damaged or come loose to me... Next time you're running low, take out the sender from the tank and check that it's clean and isn't obviously damaged... Good luck! Tip: you should be able to get around 350 miles out of a full tank, simply reset your trip counter every time you fill up to give you an estimate of how much fuel you've got left... ;)
bcstudent 0 Posted November 5, 2004 Does it simply drop from full to empty after 30 miles or is there still some kind of scaling there?
oxfordpaul 0 Posted November 5, 2004 I had a problem with mine - would fluctuate between completely full or completely empty - turned out that the whole pump / sender assembly had dislodged from the fixing in the tank (VR6) so was just swishing about in the fuel. Fixed it back into the lugs but worked once then bust again - now shows 1/3 full when full but does work when getting empty. Easy enough to look at when low on fuel - you can then check wiring etc.
emmafwa 0 Posted November 8, 2004 It gradually goes down slowly and after about 30 - 40 miles its on empty and stays there. Considering my tank takes £50 - 60 of petrol I refused to belive it was empty. Ok then I will try to look at the sensor, but where is it ? Is it under the back seat or am I miles off? Thanks for the help guys much appriciated. Emma
Henny 0 Posted November 8, 2004 Access is under a round cover in the boot... take obvious precautions like dis-connecting the battery and making sure there's no hot objects or naked flames about before going anywhere near the petrol tank though! ;)
dinkus 10 Posted November 8, 2004 Once you get the cover off you can then see the connectors on a white plastic cover. You need a large screwdriver and a mallet to remove the black ring, then the whole white bit lifts off to reveal the tank beneath. The pump is screwed into the bottom of the tank and the sendor itself is attached in there. It's probably worth checking that the float is still attached and moving freely as it sounds like it's probably catching somewhere. As Henny says, obviously take precautions! It's also not a good idea to do it when the tank is very full...
