Chip tuning…

It has been brought to our attention recently that there seems to be some problems in mechanics fitting upgraded chips and not yielding the required results.

When any chip is fitted where ever it is purchased it is recommended that the timing/mixture is adjusted to suit the new characteristics of the EPROM. Rule of thumb is to set fuelling to 14.7:1 AFR at idle then if using a quality map it should fuel correctly throughout the range. This also needs confirming by running the car to check fuelling/timing throughout the range of the engine.

AFR seems to be where people are getting confused this cannot be measured on a gas analyser it has to be checked using a specific AFR / wideband lambda reading device.

You can measure lambda value on a gas analyser. This should be typically 1volt = 14.7:1 AFR again at idle.

Cars running at 20mpg or less on non spirited driving have a problem full stop. There is either a sensor failing or there is something drastically wrong with the set up of the engine.

If your car is over fuelling before looking at the chip I would recommend checking all sensors are functioning correctly check all earths and also check voltage at fuel rail. (Should be no less than 12.5v other wise ecu will be adding fuel as a safety feature)

Also check 1 metre vacuum hose / throttle body switches /blue temp sender and timing.

An hour spent checking these simple parts of the g60 engine can completely change how your car drives and also how hard it is on your pocket.

If anyone has any further questions regarding fuelling/ setting up there g60 engine please let us know and we will endeavour to answer your questions over the phone/mail etc

Thank you …. G-werks/PSD.

Might explain Supercharged's Stage 4'd and chipped output of 175bhp and 190 torque. The torque is great but the power is way too low...espeically as it was 170 bhp standard!

Steve - get on the Blower to the G-man!

Hmmm... That might explain it then as the G'werks Wideband was not available when I was down there (it had blown up when plugged into a customers car with dodgy wiring) so not sure if the Air/Fuel Ratio was set that accuratly?

Mind you, it went like a rocket back from yours earlier Kev - Nice cold air at 3 degrees!

Kev - do you know anywhere around Ipswich that have Wideband equipement?

G-man - Might have to come down after xmas and spend some money!

Mind you there are some people with or without corrados that get a mechanic to fit a chip and then expect a car that is a beast without fixing the basic things which could be wrong with a 8-13 year old car. My experience was buying a car which i loved and then finding all of the problems in the first 8 months and having them fixed one by one before even modifing anything i.e. exhaust, full service. Only after that when the car ran sweet enough did i get ported exhaust manifold replacement pipe for Cat and Audi intercooler and the respray. Bottom line you cant make a bag of bolts run well without first doing up some of the bolts and also replacing some of them as well.

i dont think you quite understand the point here... Were not saying a chip is going to transform any car, its a insight as to HOW a eprom should be set up, as there seems to be alot of people out there setting them up incorrectly. Also i agree with bags of bolts not running well so why would any mechanic worth there salt fit a chip to the car without recommending the car was running 100% before fitment..and send customers away with shocking end results.

The original Maps are all engineered on a cross section of cars that are 100% screwed together as 'benchmark cars' that are known to have fully functional senders, ample alternator voltage, fresh injectors, strong fuel pump etc etc. Working on that assumption, if a car is not functioning correctly when any new EEPROM is fitted then this is indicative that either a sender is down, one of the adjustment parameters is set way out of normal values for the car to run correctly or there is a fault in the wiring. The EEPROM is a fixed parameter, the ECU can only supply correct values to run the car if it is been given correct information.

I have seen many cars this year that have awful overfuelling probelms which have been masked by mechanics with not a fulll understanding of digifant and its failsafe systems. The cars havve had the CO pots screwed out too 1800ohms just so they pass emmisons on idel. This may do thhe trick to pass emmissions, but is masking the problem of say a weak alternator or poor loom earths.

Yup, Wayne from Chipwizards does the same thing... as long as the car's not got a cat, it doesn't really matter where in the system the probe goes, as long as it's at a point where there is only one pipe (so it gets ALL of the gas to flow over it! ;) ) then it'll work... 8)
