Danr 0 Posted December 7, 2004 Hi ok the drivers side door stopped opening last wed the part that is prone to breaking broke, so i orderd a new handle from vw which i tried to install today after eventually getting the door card off i pulled the lock out to switch the barrels round so i could keep my old key but the old barrel dosent fit in the new handle, there is two notches which stop the barrel going all the way down, there is the letter R stamped on the bottom on the old barrel and RA on the new one. The car is a 92 with central lockin and manual windows, everything is in and workin except having to use 2 keys which im not happy about can any explain if there is a different handle i can get before i scream at vw tomoro cheers
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted December 7, 2004 You did have the key in the barrell when you tried to put it in the new handle didn't you?
Danr 0 Posted December 7, 2004 yeah lol, its hard to explain but there is 2 notches on the handle, and 2 bits cut out on the barell and on the old handle there is no notches so there is nothing cut out so it just hits them and stop about 5mm from going all the way in, it cost £80 so im not best pleased
woody 0 Posted December 7, 2004 have you got the offside handle i seem to remember i had this problem with mine.( this may be complete b******s) There are different part numbers for later handles to the older ones maybe the lock barrel is different from early to late. I changed both of mine in about a hour.

Kevin Bacon 5 Posted December 7, 2004 Very strange. Both late and early handles will take any Corrado barrell, so I'm not sure what's going on there! It's been a while since I replaced my handles! Maybe one of the other guys might have an idea.....

h100vw 0 Posted December 7, 2004 Check the parts numbers on the old and new handles. I replaced a handle on a Passat and came across the same problem. In the end I just fitted rear handles on the front as wel. I did get it to work by filing off the bit thatwas in the way. I'd take the handle back and point out the error to VW. They may get you a later lock barrel or you could try putting the sliders from your lock into the new one? Personnaly if you have remote locking and your boot lock works OK, sack the key operated front handle/s Gavin
