I have talked to a guy here in the states that did the VR6 4*4 and he said it was great but reduced the life of the drivetrain to half of the original expected life. basically it puts a good deal of stress but nothing to shatter anything, it will however deform things over the long run. he was running about 350 bhp out of a turbo VR6

what?

| dont believe that for one second. rallyes and syncros dont deform themselves do they? the only reason this would happen is if it was not done properly in the first place

all I know is he said his gears were really worn after the first year of driving it like that. deform is not the best word for that situation.

You would be better finding a syncro Passat in Canada and getting that IMO. You would have evrything you need except the propshaft. With loads of leftovers to sell and recoup some outlay.

Gavin

I just wanted to double check, is there any difference in transmissions that bolt up to the VR6 and G60 engines? If I imported a passat syncro from Canada what engine does the passat have and will it bolt to the G60 engine? What year ranges was the passat syncro made that I'd be looking for? If I really can do this with a car from Canada then it's much more likely that I'll try it.

Floorpan all drilled ready for welding

This is the cross memebr that you can't buy anymore. it has to be cut from a syncro. the ends had been cut off thos one, but I'l sort that out later

And this is where it goes

Niticed how the rear panel, which used to be the back of the boot is now under the car!

Stiffening brace. one of 2 that steady the x-member

Started filling in the hundreds of holes. 5 hours of welding gone into that panel so far (and I'm still crap at it!)

i know its a bit late for you paul but a tip for spot welding without having to drill all the holes, take the shroud of your torch or get a spare one and just cut 4 groves in it so it looks like a castleated nut then put it back on turn the amps up on the welder put the torch over where you want to weld so that it is toucing the job and put the trigger, saves alot of time and effort.

It's only a 120a welding set. I've been using it on full blast all the time! mine wouldn't be capable or doing that.

Anyway, plug welding is much stronger.

(b4stard, that could have saved me 4 hours work!!!)

getting a bit sick of welding now (mainly becazsue I'm not very good at it!)

I hate welding thin sheet, it burns through far too easily.

Almost done now though, just need some more ear plugs so I can grind back all my ugly welding and get some seam sealer and underseal on there ASAP.

I'm enjoying this thread almost as much as Celebrity Big Brother - and I enjoy that immensely. The only thing the thread lacks is Caprice!

Seriously, it's very impressive that you're taking the time to share this information with others. I'll remember you in my will.
