A Question for Leather Specialists

Recommended Posts

Its about time i restored the campaign interior to its original glory.

Does anyone have any idea on what leather was used on the campaign interior, colour code, grain, thickness etc.

If i was to take it to a retrimming specialist like mj's would he match the leather or would he find the best alternative from his own colection in which case it will not be 100% matching.

It feels that the leather vw used in their interior is softer than the one fitted to the campaign is that due to slones of kesington subcontracting the work out to local re-trimmers (does anyone know who this was?) or is there another reason for that?

Theres no reason why he couldnt source the origional leather colour..and respray it for you (cheaper and keeps it origional) no doubts u could choose a replica leather from him.

Basically most trimmers have leather books (like the wallpaper ones, but will leather samples) from all the major suppliers. Its then a case of picking out the one that matches. Your interior will have faded so don't expect perfection with the match, but only you will notice!! Leather is thinned by the supplier, they can be thinned more by special order (ie. book early). The grain is a difficult one, different suppliers press in different grains.

It was Karmann who commissioned the interiors for the Campaigns, not Slotts of Scoan Square...

Majik, be careful about the headrests, don't know if he could copy those, and they're the irreplacable bit...

Another alternative is that there are several companies that will treat your leather to restore it to it's former glory often using the original materials. I take it there's no rips or tears in the leather, in which case you should just be able to do this. AND it keeps it original too...

Check out some of the classic car mags for numbers etc.

If you went to MJ's, you should try and get him to do the rest of the interior to campaign spec.. ie the dash, steering wheel, etc etc - though it might cost a pretty penny!

last time a got a quote for the dash it was over £2k, the steering wheel is already trimmed in leather.

Capiagn: the headrest are not going to be touched, its only the the driver side lumber and bolster that is really worn and needs replacing.

Would the bolsters be available from vw or is it a recaro part?

The actual seats are Recaro parts (probably twice as expensive through VW). If you are getting them "stripped" it might be worth getting the optional lumbar supports
