Rossco 0 Posted June 9, 2003 I have noticed recently that there have been a lot of posts about a clunking noise coming from the front of the car usually occuring when changing gear. This can usually be felt underneath your feet. I my self have posted about this. The advice i recieved was to change the front engine mount, which i did and this made driving the car a lot better but it didnt cure the knock. I noticed in the engine bay that there is a small bracket that comes off the gearbox and bolts into the gearbox mount, this part was broken so i figured id change that. (Cutting a long story short) got the bit, jacked the car up to change bit, noticed the wheel could be moved a large amount up and down and realised the driveshaft was about 1 thread away from comming out, after shitting myself i tightened it up and shes sweet now. so i just thought i would share that with you lot to make sure danger cam be averted. Thanks for listening P.s does anyone know the torque settings for the driveshafts?
Rams 0 Posted June 9, 2003 mate, I have the same problem, I have a nocking noise when I pull away fast or even when I really hit a corner at speed, I changed the front mount and it felt better but still the nocking noise was there.... I took it to a few garages and my mechanic stuck his head underneath the car whilst I turned the steering wheel from lock to lock.... the noise / nock happens when steering so he said it sounds like your top mount bearings are faulty? Anywayn I took the shock off and replaced the bearing and noticed that the top mount cup, thats the cup the holds the spring in place was oval shaped from the impact that side took from my accident, this cup fits over the strut so when you pull away or brake the whole shock / struts moves. All the shops were closed so I tapped the metal back down to make the hole as round as possible and still the noise / knock is still there, it doesnt sound any different even from my tempory fix. The steering feels fine, there is no other noises or feeling when driving at speed and all the joints, wishbones and ball joints and everything under there feels nice and tight. I will check the gearbox mount and the poart that you have explained about so hopefully that will cure my problem. You can feel the movment under your feet like you have described. Could you come back to me so I can have a chat with you. Cheers , also if anyone can shed light onto the subject I would welcome your thoughts.
