Alpine Head Unit Installtion

Recommended Posts

Just bought a Alpine CDA-9835 CD/MP3/WMA off ebay to replace my old Alpine head unit, all eager to get it going and listen to mp3 CDs, but the installation is a bit more complex than before.

I thought it would be a case of just unplugging one iso connector and plugging it back into the new stereo, but the new head unit is 26 watts RMS per channel or something massive and says to run a 20A feed off the battery for the main live, and earth it to the chassis.

Feeling a bit cautious Im going to wait till Saturday and connect it as it says in the instructions, as I've knackered the electrics on an Cavalier with high powered ICE installs.

Anyone else fitting a new Alpine direct off the battery, or just tried plugging it into the existing connectors?

Cheers

if it says it needs 20A, then it needs 20A.

runa new power feed into the car using suitable rated cabling, fuse it within 12" of the battery. use the same sized earth wiring and mount that to a proper earth point inside the car. if you can't find one then make one.

if you just plug it into your iso conenctor as soon as you crank up the bass and volume it'll draw too much current for the corrado wiring system to take. it'll either blow the fure (if it's still got a 10a in it that is) or it'll overload the wires and could cause a fire.

I've got a 9835R in my Corrado and it's just connected to the normal VW ISO connector.

It might be worthwhile using a feed from the battery instead of the ISO feed if you're using the 9835R's internal amplifier but if you're using an external amp to drive all the speakers as I'm doing, don't bother. You can turn the internal amp off on the '35R and there's no way it will draw anything like 20 amps in that configuration.

Run it on the ISO and if it dims in time with the music when cranked up, then consider a seperate feed.

you would only need to run a seperate feed to the head unit if the cable in the existing loom is of a smaller csa than the wiring for the permenant feed on the head unit. you can get away without a seperate feed on newer cars as the cables tend to be slightly bigger than older cars. cant remember how big the cables in the corrado are but i would suggest you put a bit of 6mm cable in and a 20A fuse to be on the safe side

Cheers for the help everyone!

I played in safe and did things by the book with a 20A cable from the battery and 20A cable to earth on the chassis, last thing I want smoking electrics on the C.

The head unit is really impressive, I would recommend it, but off ebay not from over-priced uk shops.

I just found a kicker amp I forgot I had and a pile of cables/ connector etc, I might rig up a system again if I can be bothered.

Cheers
