engine starts and sometimes doesn't idle just cuts out

hey all

 

car is rado 18.16v. very occasionally car starts fine and just cuts out doesn't idle, if i rev it for a few minutes or drive it, it solves the problem and the car idles fine.

 

any ideas people???

Could be the ISV, fuel pump or WUR on the way out, also check that the top of the airbox is fully secured to the air box. If too much air is getting in through there the car wont idle.

I reckon it's a poor connection on the cold start injector. Had this problem all the time on my old Golf 16Vs. It's earth is shared down by the battery tray with a bunch of others and it always used to corrode.

 

As the CS injector only works for about 5 to 10 seconds (depending on what the thermotime switch determines) you can get the car to run by starting it and holding your foot on the gas for a while, by which time the engine will be warm enough to run....hence your discovery it idles OK after a few mins of driving.
