Need to top up oil, don't know what's in it... can I mix?

Hi all,

 

Sorry if this has been asked before - I found some almost-similar stuff in the archives but nothing that fully answered my question.

 

I have a long journey to go on over the weekend and need to top the oil up in my VR6. Unfortunately, I have no idea what oil is in there right now - the supplying garage changed it before I got it and I haven't done enough miles to warrant a change yet.

 

If I put semi synthetic in, will it mix okay with whatever's in there? I'm not sure I can get a filter and the other bits required for a full oil change in time.

yup, stick some Quantum silver (good quality, semi synthetic available cheap from VW) in there to top it up... It'll mix with no problems and is the recommended oil for Corrado engines anyway... 8)

Mixing is no problem so long as you use the same viscosity.

Oddly, the engine is definitely more rattly having topped up with the Quantum oil. Must've had something thicker in it before. :o/

 

Also, 1.75 litres in ~1500 miles (

 

How much are oversize pistons?

German and Swedish were doing 25 ltrs of Quantum Silver for £35 last time I was in!

Last lot I bought was 7.05 + VAT!

 

Its only about £15 retail - what did you buy!?!

It said quantum on it, was silver, and was on a shelf with other oily type stuff in my local dealer.

 

I'll have a closer look at it later, I've been in a hurry for a while and only checked the viscosity, not owt else.

Does it have to be the same viscocity? Say if there was a oil viscocity of 15 (15/40 oil) in the engine and you added an oil with a viscocity of 10 (quantum stuff 10/40), would it really matter? Wouldn't it just end up being an average of the two depending on the amount added etc? So viscocity could end up being 14 or something? Would that really have an effect on engine wear etc?

Ford, yeah, that's pretty much what'd happen... It'd only be a problem if you're adding in LOTS of a much thinner oil to something unknown... ;)

nah, I used to buy a litre of semi and a litre of fully synthetic gearbox oil, mix 'em together and use that in my gearboxes before I discovered (thanks to this place) Redline MTM gear oil... To be fair, there's only a TINY amount of improvement, but it's nice to know that the oil is actually designed to be the way it is... ;)

 

Same thing for engine oils really... I normally try to top up with the same oil I've put in at the last service, but if I find it's a little low and I'm nowhere near a VAG dealer or ECP / GSF branch, then I'll just use a good semi from the nearest garage... 8)
