P38Aaron 0 Posted February 28, 2005 Hello, Corrado VR6 L reg, 95k. Interior fan is only working on speed 4, getting nothing from the other speeds, first of all checked the switch is ok a little squirt of the trusty wd40 seems ok, took fan out and checked that i am getting voltage to it, disconnected the loom it has 5 cables going to it, earth and 4 power leads, am getting 12 volts to each cable on different speeds, ok there! took fan out of plastic housing and disconnected it from the little transformer and reconnected the loom on speed 1 to 3 am getting a voltage of 0.445volts on the output of the transformer on speed 4 am getting an output of 11.93volts. Would anybody agree that I have diagnosed the problem as transformer fault? Am gonna pop into VW's tomorrow and prob order a new one and see what they say, has anybody had this problem or know how much a new one will be? Thanks for taking the time to read this and would appreciate any replies. Thanks again Aaron
Rustynuts 0 Posted February 28, 2005 Yeah 99% its that resistor pack that sits on the fan housing (well it does on golfs) Someone told me they are about £45 on Corrados so twice as much as the Golf 3 speed version
P38Aaron 0 Posted February 28, 2005 Thanks for the reply, I will post an answer weather it was 100%. Thanks again!
crazymarcel 0 Posted February 28, 2005 Problem i had on mine when it would only work on speed 4 was the plastic control knob was pushing the copper contact back too far a bit of careful bending and all was well again. Probley nothing too do with yours but worth trying.
Henny 0 Posted March 1, 2005 this is a common fault. If you take off the resistor pack (the metal bit with the wiring connector on it on the fan) you'll see a LARGE ceramic resistor pack on it. Above that, there's a small silver cylinder: This is the thermal fuse. The odds are that the bearings in your fan have worn and the fan has been drawing too much current, overheating the resistor which has blown the thermal fuse. This fuse can be bought for about 40p from Maplins or RScomponents and is a 2 minute job to solder in a new one... Full instructions are HERE Oh, and I've moved this thread to Interior instead of being in Enginebay... 8)
P38Aaron 0 Posted March 2, 2005 First off thanks to everybody that replied, a great help! was too late to read the reply on the resistor and had already ordered the transformer pack. Have just fitted it and given it a test and it works now on all 4 speeds  cant really be bothered to put everything back together yet as its snowing  the part number for the whole pack is 536959263 and this all come to £57.99 would have rather spent 40p but hey its done now. Thanks again and happy Corrado'ing Aaron great web page henny!
