biggrim 0 Posted March 3, 2005 Sorry if this has been covered before, I tried the search but got 42 pages of results and I'm at work so can't browse them all to find it if it has. Whilst I have the alternator, charger and bracket off for changing my water pump I was going to change the timing belt and tensioner as the car will be partially in bits. I've got a couple of questions before I jump in and break my car at the weekend. How do I change said items? Do I need any specialist tools? Anything else I could be doing with changing while I have all this off? Any feedback appreciated, cheers
Supercharged 2 Posted March 3, 2005 Anything else I could be doing with changing while I have all this off? Crank bolt!

Supercharged 2 Posted March 3, 2005 ...Except a 210Nm Torque Wrench...
Majik 0 Posted March 3, 2005 The crank pully bolt doesnt have to be taken off to do the cambelt, only you want to replace the bolt then. Also block the ports of the s/c off with masking tape or similar to stop debris getting inside.
Henny 0 Posted March 3, 2005 Majik, Good point! 8) Disposable rubber gloves work much better though, and you don't have problems with them not sticking to any crud on the charger casing like you would with masking tape... ;) (a trick learnt from G-man when he sent me my charger back... 8) ) Supercharged, A good torque wrench should be an essential normal tool for anyone doing any engine work like this... it's not a specialist tool... biggrim 0 Posted March 3, 2005 Ok, what's the part number for the crank bolt? I don't want what happened to Henny and Supercharged to happen to me! So I'll have the charger and alternator off and the water pump will be replaced. How do I change the crank bolt and the timing belt and tensioner? Will be getting done on saturday so be prepared for emergency posts regarding the work. Might take some pics and do a how to of it. (I'm sure I said that about doing my alternator tho). Cheers for the tips guys, keep it coming
biggrim 0 Posted March 3, 2005 What is the part number for the crank bolt? There are two types are there not? Want to get the one that isn't sh!te
h100vw 0 Posted March 3, 2005 You want the one from a MK1 Golf GTI DX engine and the washer that goes with it. As you will be getting it from a dub dealer have them get you the number. Gavin
biggrim 0 Posted March 3, 2005 Cool cheers mate.
potatonet 0 Posted March 3, 2005 if your crank bolt is loose with the car have no power because of the engine not spinning the alternator and/or charger?
Henny 0 Posted March 4, 2005 potatonet, if the crank bolt is loose/shears off, your CAMBELT is affected and either messes the timing up or the cambelt comes off and messes up your engine... :| It's worth checking and replacing the bolt no matter if you're worried about it being a problem or not.... it's a £5 part (inc washer!) which could save you from having to have an engine rebuild... that's a no-brainer to me... ;) (just wish I'd have known about it before mine sheared off... )
Supercharged 2 Posted March 5, 2005 Ok, what's the part number for the crank bolt? I don't want what happened to Henny and Supercharged to happen to me! Mine didn't snap, I just replaced it! Just order a crank bolt from the dealer, looks the same as the original but has been superceded by a non stretch type... Part number is on here is you search. biggrim 0 Posted March 5, 2005 Got the bits I need for this. Will be doing it in about 10 minutes time. If I have any problems, I'll be on here looking for some guidance if that's ok. Will be doing the water pump too so wish me luck. Thanks for the input so far guys
h100vw 0 Posted March 5, 2005 The DX bolt is a 6 point bolt not a 12 point like the stretchy one. The DX bolt is likely to be the superceded one. Gavin
