It won't run

Hello everyone, I'm brand new to this. I bought an 'L' reg Corrado in June. Which, after having a Ford Escort 1300 for 3 months (after my ex-wife made me get rid of my Scirocco) was sheer ectasy. 3 weeks ago, it just started running really rough. a call to the AA got me home. Next morning, turned it over, started first time, as usual, then began to tick over really rough. Touched the accelerator, and the engine died. Re-started, only just ticking over, but no revs. Touched accelerator, and dead. The follwoing morning it took me 2 miles, then the same thing. I think it could be the fuel distribution unit, anyone got any ideas?

It has done 160,000 miles.

My Scirocco did 42 mpg, and cost me £43 for it's last MOT (new handbrake cable & wipers (uneconomical - she said!!!). So I seperated from her in September, 2003. Got rid of the Escort that her dad bought for me, and got my 2 litre 16v Corrado.

does the throttle mechanism close properly and operate the little microswitch?

 

could also be the isv(idle stabilisation valve),if you turn on the ignition,you should be able to hear/feel it buzzing.

 

even if it is,it may not be working correctly,you can take em off and soak in petrol to clean em.

 

worth changing the fuel filter too just as a cheap elimination.

could be a few things i suppose though,does it do it when hot/cold?

Mine does as similar thing to this, and I found that if I disconnect the ISV, it doesn't stall, but the idle sits a little higher - 1000-1100rpm and if you blip the throttle the idle doesn't stabalise as quickly. But, it might be worth a try.
