Sticky Doors

Recommended Posts

Ive heard lots about door handles breaking and guess this is because of the doors sticking like a freezer door. How can i stop this. Ive tried some WD40 on the seal but doesnt make much difference....

WD40 is not a long term lubricant, WD stands for Water Displacement it was originally designed to be sprayed on electronics to dry them out... DO NOT use it to lubricate moving parts. You want to use a grease, any kind really, lithium or whatever.

Here's a post off vwvortex about fixing the cause of broken door handles:

My friend had this problem on his DS door. He bought a new handle from the dealer the first time and then less then a year later it broke again.

The dealer covered the handle under warrenty but the head tech there

mention to him that the problem was not the door handle but rather the

latching mechanism on the door. The tech said to take the gold anodised

latch box off the door while replacing the door handle and to clean it

out with something like carb cleaner and an air nozzle and then to

regrease it. My friend did this without completely removing the latch

mechanism from the door(the wires or linkage were still connected but it

was pulled away from the door) 3 years later my friend has not broken any more door handles. I did this after breaking my door handle 2 years ago

and haven't had any problems either.

But the reason why the door handles break is because of the grit build up in the latch. The grit increases the friction to a point beyond where the

handle is strong enough to pull without breaking. clean the grit out and

grease the parts back up. and all should be good

Hope that helps

Oh you mean the rubber seals. Hadn't thought of that, I don't think those cause the handles to break though. I would clean & grease the latch box every few years...

The handles are a poor design and always break at the same week point but fair enough, original handles may last longer if the lock mechs are cleaned and regreased
