Gearstick movement when in gear

Recommended Posts

Just bought my first ever Corrado, pick it up tomorrow. Only thing I found wrong with it is when its in gear you can wobble the gearstick side to side quite a bit.

My mate has a corrado and his gearbox feels very precise, nothing like mine.

Any ideas what would cause this?

Thanks

Chris

lift up the surround around the gear knob (pull up where the Karmann badge is)

You can then see the gear lever mechanism. I'll bet that on the left hand side of the pivot for the forwards/backwards movement there's no circlip... ;)

The little clip is supposed to stop the lever from sliding along it's pivot, but it often comes off/breaks and so the lever gains a large amount of side to side travel as it slides where it's not supposed to...

Good news is that the clip is about 20p from VW! 8)

True, but they only take a day or so to come into stock once you've ordered it and at least the car is still drivable when the clip's not fitted... ;)

There are two types, early and late. Late has a small locating hole in the centre that drops over a small 'nipple' on the pivot shaft. I think I have one of each lying around. I'll try and get a pic of them.

Just run out to the shed with camera in hand.

Have a look at the pivot shaft end on the shifter. If it has the afore mentioned 'nipple' then you need the later clip.

They are not interchangeable so identify the right one.
