Mileage memory is held in a chip inside the speedo/rev counter unit. Sounds like your's may be knackered.

Try disconnecting & then reconnecting the battery

kasman21, has your instrument cluster got 1 LCD display or 2?

ie. an LCD in the temp/petrol gauge AND one in the speedo, or have you got mechanical numbers on the milage counter in the speedo?

Just disconnect the battery & see what mileage it shows when you re-connect it.

This may work if you have an electronic mileometer. Sometimes (based on my experience) when you re-connect the battery the mileage goes back to it's correct reading.

If you have the older style mileometer with the little wheels that turn round, disconnecting the battery will make no difference.

it has one lcd i think, the car is a 89' g plate. the mileage is on the little wheels that turn round in the middle of the speedo, even the ones below where you can reset to show mileage for certain journeys doesn't work.

help!!!! its driving me nuts!!

In that case, one of the drive cogs inside the speedo has come off it's shaft... this is quite common on higher milage (over 100K miles) VWs which used this kind of speedo/odometer...

You need to take it out, strip it down and superglue the cog back on again...

Good news is that it should be nice and cheap to do if you do it yourself and that it's not rocket science to do it either... 8)
