Changing Coolant on 16v

Recommended Posts

Have done a search on changing the coolant, but still unclear on a few points

1. Does the 1.8 16v have a drain plug on the bottom of the radiator?

2. Should the coolant be poured through the expansion tank or the top radiator hose?

3. Is it G11 coolant I use or G12?

8) Cheers, any help appreciated

Hi there, having recently done this I think I can help...

1) No (or at least no one that I found :)). I just emptied mine by undoing the bottom hose and then running water through it until it ran clear.

2) I poured mine in through the top radiator hose and topped up through the expansion tank after running the engine, squeezing the hoses etc.

3) Use G12+ as you shouldn't be able to buy either G11 or G12. If you mix G11 and G12 together they'll gunk up your cooling system but you can mix G12+ with either safely. About a 60% water 40% G12+ mix should do the trick.

Your cooling system capacity is 5.5l so 2 bottles of G12+ should suffice.

Cheers,

Tom

P.S If your spring clips are looking worn, you might as well replace them with jubilee clips.

Rumour has it those spring clips were one use only. They are royal pain in the heiny if you ask me, jubilee is the way forward. :)
