Temperature Gauge Flashing ????

alrighty peeps

 

my temperature gauge warning light keeps flashing on my 1990 16valver and doesnt stop but strangely if i turn the engine off then back on again it stops???

 

any ideas as its really annoying

this happened to me, the sender in the coolant bottle was knackered. On a G60 the you needed to buy the collant bottle as there was no way to just change he sender. Did that and all was lovely

Dumb (and slightly weird) suggestion: check your oil level.

 

I'm not sure how applicable it will be to a 16v, but it certainly seemed to stop the flashing temp/water light on my 8v DX engine when I found it was at the low end of low...

 

[worth doing regularly anyway]

what a plonker !!! Noticed that what i thought was plenty of water was actually an old scum line !!! put some water in and its now fine

 

Doh !

 

Still never mind probably best if i buy a new bottle anyway as mine is completely mank

unless u got it cheap and are a diyer or got usefull m8s, get rid it could be trouble!

coolant loss=not good

your engine should not use coolant?

check for visible leaks with engine running, check for white residue around flages/hoses

i dont think there is any leaks definately not anything major and it is only really my weekend toy its not really a big deal if i have to top up every now and again but i will get it looked at though if i have to top up again in the near future

 

by the way it was pretty cheap

A garage can easily do a pressure test on the cooling system. I had this done recently, and it was my thermostat housing that was leaking. Changed it for about £80+vat & labour, job was a gooden.
