Critical_Mass 10 Posted September 14, 2005 Hello, Im now worried to hell. Im pretty sure the MFA on my G60 was working properly after i bought it. However it has started to reset itself once ignition is turned off, is this a 100% sign its has being clocked or can there be another reason why this is happening? the car had done 106k from 1991 (year of reg) The bloke i bought it off said he got it HPi checked and i have the docs. Is there anything else it could be? Also is the radio suppose to turn itself off when ignition is off and on when ignition is turned on? Cheers
vr6storm 0 Posted September 14, 2005 from memory it'll "reset" itself after 1 or 2 hours of not having the key in the ignition when its on MFA1..........MFA2 should be continous tho........well till its 99.59 hours and/or 999.9 miles or when the battery has been disconnected
Critical_Mass 10 Posted September 14, 2005 no the whole lot resets itself, the clock even resets itself. Dodgy wiring maybe? or something more serious?
Henny 0 Posted September 14, 2005 Classic sign of a dead fuse... Check 'em carefully and you'll find one that's blown... When the dash is clocked, the MFA tends to go nuts, not just loosing its settings with the ignition off, that's just a power supply fault. 8) Don't worry... 8)
StormVR6 0 Posted September 14, 2005 Fuse 21 is the one IIRC
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted September 14, 2005 The only fuse related to the MFA is the main one for the whole instrument cluster itself and it's the end one as StormVR6 said (far right). If that's blown, you don't get a display at all. MFA resetting - Could be a dodgy stalk switch, the result of some bodging, the board itself is screwed...anything. There was an old trick done to MK2 golfs to cure iffy MFAs, and that was to pulse the negative lead on/off the battery a few times. Seemed to kind 'kick start' them again, it sounded like horsesh1t to me when I first heard of it, but it did work..... Radio - Should turn off and on with the igntion, yep, but that's easy to circumvent. The radio should stay on until the key is removed from the barrel also. The MFA display still worked but would keep resetting itself upon starting. Fuse 21 runs the MFA, S/R and interior light switch, CL and cigar lighter. If fuse 21 continues to blow then start by disconnecting the cigar lighter and then work from there checking the above.
Henny 0 Posted September 14, 2005 kevhaywire, not true matey, there's 2 fuses associated with the clocks. There has to be 'cos there's a permanent live (fuse 21) which keeps the clock on and keeps the MFA memory live, and an ignition one (don't know which fuse number) which allows the speedo, rev counter, fuel and temp gauges and MFA functions to work when live... If the permanent live dies, then the MFA and clock reset (and go blank) once the ignition is turned off, but it works perfectly when the ignition is on... This is how my Grey G60 was when I bought her and IIRC it turned out to be a dead bulb in the interior light that had blown the fuse...
Kevin Bacon 5 Posted September 14, 2005 Bloody ell, corrected twice and in the space of 2 minutes! Thank you for correcting my error..... but it was just a test to see who would spot it
Critical_Mass 10 Posted September 14, 2005 thanks for the reply lads!!!! can someone however conclude what im to do to fix it. now ive read what youve all put i forgot to say that the interior light, cig light and light in the sunvisor did stop working too. Ive checked fuses cant see one thats blown.
StormVR6 0 Posted September 14, 2005 If fuse 21 has not blown (do check properly for hairline fractures) then start by disconnecting all parts (in turn) that run from fuse 21 (said above), although if any of the said parts are shorting then the fuse should blow unless a higher amp has been fitted, should be 15 amps. Henny 0 Posted September 14, 2005 Critical_Mass, DEFINATELY check fuse 21 then. it's gonna either be missing or dead as a dodo...
Critical_Mass 10 Posted September 14, 2005 ok ill check tomorrow and let you guys know, So the int light, cig light, sunvisor light and also mfa not working properly/at all is linked to this one problem? sorry if i sound dumb, just double checking to save future unnecessary questions. Supercharged 2 Posted September 14, 2005 Yep, they are all on the same circuit, look in the fuse section of the owners manual! Locate the blown fuse, replace it (like for like) then try each device once at a time to see if the fuse blows, maybe a dodgy bulb, maybe some bad wiring or caused be something plugged into the cig lighter but more than likely it will all be ok again after replacement, carry a couple of spares too!
