Bally 0 Posted August 7, 2003 as above, I'm looking to buy a corrado in the next month or so, need as much info as pos, looking to buy a 2.0L 16v.. on a K-reg onwards.. anyone tell me what to look out for, how much I should be paying for one? also noticed alot of the cars are showing more than 100k, what are the 16v lumps like? would I be making a made move to buy say a motor with 146k with full history? would I be better of with a low mileage one? (if I can find one) as I do alot of miles, and looking for realibilty! please help...

G60 0 Posted August 7, 2003 get a 2L with a strong bottom end... with 146k i dunno why the bottom *wouldn't* still be strong... and stick a 1.8L head on there. KR i think is the code. where's bluxie to chime in on how much better the KR head is??? ;) or better yet get a G60. 8)
Bally 0 Posted August 7, 2003 Cheers for the reply, would get a G60 if I wasn't doing so many miles, but as I am, I perfer to go for a 2.0L for now, then get a VR6 Storm in a few years time.. are 1.8 16v any good? cos a few people have said to sty away from early cars like the 1.8? please someone tell me otherwise, cos i saw a H plater with 116k folder full of history, would it be worth going to have a look?? VR6 0 Posted August 7, 2003 I think the 1.8 valver is pretty much on par with the 2.0 16v. IIRC, the 1.8 is a little faster to 60 because it doesn't have a cat. What's your budget?
Jim 2 Posted August 7, 2003 If you are looking for real reliability, spend as much as you can with as little mileage as possible. The Corrado engines are good (FSH is highly reccomended) but best not chance it with a 146k'er if you can get one with half of that, when you want good reliability. As Tom says, what kinda budget you looking at?
Bally 0 Posted August 8, 2003 Cheers for the replies, I've got a budget of around 2 - 2.5k providing I get the money Im asking for for my car. (heres a pic) LOL yes I no its a ford! no piss takers please! LOL I did see a 2.0 16v advertised with 78k for sale, it was cheap, some german guy selling it, thing is it was red! mrs don't like red cars, then again I'm the one driving it! Should I go for the 1.8 or the 2.0 then chaps? I did see a car advertised on H plate, showing 112k? its going for 2k, but not sure if its worth it? has a folder full of history from what the owner told me.. markTTC 0 Posted August 8, 2003 Go for the 2.0 16V - It has better midrange torque. The 1.8 is marginally faster - if you like revving the knackers out of your car. The 2.0 had the revised interior - only minor changes like switchgear and the instrument cluster were changed though. The exterior got the revised bumpers and bonnet that the VR6 also wears. Problems? Make sure the cambelt has been done at the 60K intervals. Check for a rattling Cat heatsheild - it will be a sort of buzzing noise coming from the back of the engine at certain parts of the rev range. Check the heater controls function correctly - turn the direction knob(screen, face and feet) and check it doesn't feel tight (or very loose if it's totally broken!). Check all electrics - spoiler, roof, mirrors, windows. Check for play in steering rack etc. All usual things - check for blue smoke, white smoke, mayo in the oil filler cap, oil in the expansion tank etc. HTH Cheers Mark (2.0 16V - 118K)

Bally 0 Posted August 8, 2003 cheers mate, going to need it..
Scott 0 Posted August 8, 2003 Sorry I disagree - the 2.0 16V might have better mid range but it makes for a slower car that I felt is sluggish - the 1.8 16V is a buzz bomb and a lot more fun to drive.... parts also cheaper, cars are cheaper so cant fault it... When my 1.8 16V was smashed I thought a 2.0 16V was the way to go - I know my 1.8 was a cracker but I was pretty disgusted with how sluggish and slow the 2.0 felt when I test drove a few - one bloke who was selling one was trying to convince me the 2.0 was faster than the 1.8  - not so... Hence I bought a VR6... A G60 is a great car but buying a high miler could be very risky indeed.... My 2p. (kerplink!) Scott
Bally 0 Posted August 8, 2003 Thanks for the reply mate, I'll see what I find then..
Scott 0 Posted August 8, 2003 You should be able to find a sensible low mileage 1.8 16V with a FSH and LOADS of history for under £2k.... If you go for the 1.8 16V - then ensure its on a 1991... as one of the last 1.8's and you get a decent spec unlike the early ones... Also if nothing else.... ensure that the engine does not pink as modifying the timing on them is very hard and quite pricey
Bally 0 Posted August 12, 2003 cheers scott, I'm looking for a 2.0L 16v on a K hopefully, its done over 100k, but the lumps meant to be sweet...
Scott 0 Posted August 12, 2003 As long as it has a folder of reciepts and a FSH (by specialist or main dealer) then should be fine.
