woody 0 Posted November 24, 2005 Managed to get hold of a late dash and all the panels for my early G60. Question 1 Are all of the mounting holes for the dash the same early to late Question 2 I am going to have to find all new late switches, Are passat ones about K M reg the same? Question 3 ( No Air Con ) I am going to change the matrix at the same time as the dash will be out. Is there any difference between the matrixs for early / late ? length of cables to heater controls / different type of connections?? Question 4 Are the connectors on the back of all of the late switches a different design from the early connectors. Cheers Woody
Shilakadaddy 0 Posted November 24, 2005 1: Almost, the centre mounting bracket didn't fit on mine and needed to be removed - doesn't seem to have made much difference tho 2: Not all - the headlight and spoiler switches are the same. Don't know about the passat 3: ? 4: Yes. That reminds me I need to look for a late spec wiring loom Chris :)
trev-b 0 Posted November 25, 2005 Is it possible to replace an early dash shell with a late one but retain all of the early switches and controls?
dinkus 10 Posted November 25, 2005 The shell itself of the dash is virtually the same apart from the middle bracket. So you can just swap all the vents and switches onto a late shell :)
woody 0 Posted November 26, 2005 dinkus when you say the middle bracket do you mean the middle part which has the blower controls.
dinkus 10 Posted November 26, 2005 The shell of the dash itself (all of the bit with the faux leather texture vinyl on it) is the same, apart from a bracket somewhere around the centre console area. I'm not sure exactly what it is because I've never seen an early dash shell. As the guys above say though, you can cut it off/mod it easily enough. The centre console insert is a different shape to the early ones - it fits in the same gap in the dash, but has different shape vents moulded into it and the holes for the heater controls and the cubby-hole bit at the bottom are a different size/shape. Guest Posted November 26, 2005 So presumably you could fit the late switches, vents, centre console insert, etc, into and early dash if you wanted the later look? Cheers Dusty
dinkus 10 Posted November 26, 2005 So presumably you could fit the late switches, vents, centre console insert, etc, into and early dash if you wanted the later look? Yup :) But if you need to find all those bits, it's usually easier to swap the whole shebang. The only bit I'm not sure about is hooking up the new-style dial heater controls to the old style slider mechs. I'm not sure how much of that lot needs to be replaced. Guest Posted November 26, 2005 And having thought about it there would be the small matter of changing the wiring Loom ( I presume the plugs are different on the later switches?), can the Wiring loom behind the Dash be disconnected from the main loom or is it more complicated than that? dinkus 10 Posted November 26, 2005 Oh yeah, and all the switches have different connectors  Well if you get a complete loom back to the fusebox, you can 'just' swap it over - provided you've got the time and patiene to sit there and de-loom all the old stuff and put the new stuff in. Guest Posted November 27, 2005 provided you've got the time and patiene to sit there and de-loom all the old stuff and put the new stuff in. Probably not! Any way I'm getting a bit ahead of myself considering I haven't even picked the car up yet (or even seen it!) I'm flying over to blighty on Friday to collect it, and bring it home via a charger rebuild at G-Werks. Can't wait, its going to be a long week......
