Steve,

 

The problem with the TDI you drove is likely to be the MAF sensor. Very common fault on all 1.8T and 1.9TDI.

 

Sure way to check it is to simply turn off ignition, unplug, start engine and drive.

 

If it drives OK then the sensor is contaminated/shot.

 

Happened to mine/yours!!.

 

Cheapest way is to get the Mercedes C220 Pierberg version.
