Right - looked a the 'excellent condition' VR6 &........

had a good look at the VR6 that I mentioned in my other thread. Nice owner, no trouble in having a good drive & look round but the car is not excellent by any means. Car drives well enough, engine feels strong, bo smoke, no chain rattle. MFA all works fine, oil temp held at 82 - 84 deg. Water gauge only just moved of the stop but temps seemed fine. Engine a little dirty but to be expected. Interior not to bad at all, all switches & electrics worked fine.

 

All 4 wheels need referb.

2 front tyres needed & rears ok but don't match.

Rear discs all rusted up, caplier grabbing 15% of disc service (1 x 10mm band) if lucky

Both rear wheel arches scratched (parking injuries) 1 touched up badly, 1 left, not rusty thou.

Rear bumper nearside scratched.

ABS not working - owner thinks disconected 2 yrs ago but can't remember why. (he is speaking to the specialist who services it to try & find out.)

Good history re servicing except no record of timing chain / tensioners being changed (again he is trying to find out)

Stone chips on front, not to bad considering mileage.

 

What say all of you? Price down to 3k ish now but with all the above I am at the moment walking away.

 

If I considered the above, any ideas on costs?

wheels needing a refurb are what i'd class as fair wear n tear so to speak,tyres are a consumable and don't really come into the equation as a sign of a bad car.......just bad on the owner for mixing them,bodywork by the sounds of it is just minor cosmetics,as long as its not ding'd and rusty then just need to save up for a blowover/respray

 

what is worrying is......".ABS light disconnected about 2 years ago"!!!!...........that means that its not went thru a proper MOT test......so what else has been missed!!.........could be something to do with the rear disc problem too

 

timing chains are meant to be a lifetime thing tho but others do advise changing it,there isn't a set interval that VW recommends to do it,so i wouldn't make too big an issue about it unless they are noisy

er walk away unless he will drop mate. £3k is about the money recently for an OK Vr6 with EVERYTHING working. Fixing the ABS will be expensive unless you are fairly handy.

 

VR6 Corrados are going for what seems like peanuts recently - see the classifieds on here for some examples.

 

You don't state the mileage, but it is likely the owner would remember having the chains done cos its a big bill (circa £1k with clutch).

The ABS thing could be expensive to sort so see if he will keep going. A wheel refurb isn't going to break the bank but the ABS could be a lot of labour to get fixed depending on how much of a bodge has been done to disable the system!

The ABS is the thing that is causing me to walk away tbh. Wheels / bobywork I can budget for depending on buying price but like you have said, ABS is an unknow cost till looked at.

 

I recon that this car will be knocked on the head, can't see the price dropping much more & the MOT is due mid Jan as well.

Yeah - walk away, it sounds a shed, far more better examples around at the moment...

 

With rear tyres that don't match, calipers that need replacing and no ABS you wonder what else is wrong!
