Blue_Joe 0 Posted January 8, 2006 Make sure that if you go for a G60 that the charger has been serviced or allow £500 for a rebuild! Other than that check out the buyers guide on here http://www.the-corrado.net/wiki/index.php?title=The_Corrado_Buying_Guide_%26_Checklist
mo_527 0 Posted January 8, 2006 thank you, what do you mean by charger been serviced or rebuild?
Walesy 0 Posted January 8, 2006 The G60 Corrado has a supercharger fitted . The supercharger (( called G-Lader )) need a rebuild every 45k miles (( recommended )) as they have a habit of blowing up internaly if certain seels etc aren't replaced. mo_527 0 Posted January 8, 2006 if the supercharger does blow up would it cause alot of damge to the engine and is it expensive to do? what do you recommend i should get a G60 or 1.8 16v. sorry and also do you no the average price on one. thanks. Walesy 0 Posted January 8, 2006 A charger rebuild is around £350 I think. If the charger granades itself it can cause damage to the engine as the job of the charger is to blow air into the engine quickly ( basicaly ) so obviously if it explodes it can suck bits of itself into the engine causeing headaches. If you use the search feature you'l find alot of threads from people asking the same question. It all depends on the person buying, budget etc. If you don't want to have to play about and worry about your car then a 16v is probebly the best. they can be picked up from £1000 to £2000
Dub_nut_g60 0 Posted January 8, 2006 the charger itself is about £1K AFAIK, there is a possibility of parts ending up in engine if it grenades, much better to just get it services once youve bought it unless its been done recently, If at all unsure about the last time the charger was done get it booked in with Darren (g-man) to get it done. Wherabouts are you based as no doubt some of the guys near you will be willing to let you have a look at their motors and have a drive so you can form your own opinion over what you want! Persannly ive only ever been in the G60 but the noise was enough to make me fall in love and get my own! £2,500 should get you a very tidy G60 at current prices. mo_527 0 Posted January 8, 2006 so which one would you go for and why please. im thinking of spending about £2500. I have been told that the G60s are quite fast do you know how the 1.8 16V would compare?
mo_527 0 Posted January 8, 2006 Dub_nut_g60, im in birmingham been looking on the autotrader seen a dragon green corrado 1.8 G60 with stage 4 its going for about £3250.00, what do you think of that it also mentions that the supercharger has been rebuilt in 2005, have you had any trouble with your car, i just want to make sure i get a good deal. my mate had a G60 but he never looked after it well enough and i had a fuel leak and the engine caught on fire ( what a waste ) but the car was really nice. Dub_nut_g60 0 Posted January 8, 2006 the G60 is a great little motor as you said its pretty rapid! i cant make comment on the 16v though. As has been said its all personnaly choice, some people dont like listening to a charger all day but others cant be without it! Best thing you could do is drive both and decide which is best for you. also have a look in the 'for sale' section here and the buying guide. Im willing to let you have a drive of my G if your within a reasonable distance!
Dub_nut_g60 0 Posted January 8, 2006 only problem ive had is collant related, to be expected on a older car really! for that sort of money id be wanting a real low mileage minter! The charger may of been done in 2005, but how many miles has it done?? have you got a link at all?
Blue_Joe 0 Posted January 8, 2006 mo_527 If you want any help with looking for a G60 then I can help as I also live in Birmingham! The G60 is a fantastic motor providing you look after it! I would offer to let you drive mine but it is currently off the road with a major rebuild and modification and truth be told is no longer anything like a standard motor. Also being in birmingham I can introduce you to a couple of garages that can help with all aspects of the G60. My friends garage is EXTREMELY reasonable and he knows everything there is to know about G60's and all other VW's die to the fact he's rebuilt a G60 from scratch, he does alot of work on mine and other peoples VW's including currently building a VR6 Mk2 Golf. drop me a pm and I'll send my phone number to you! mo_527 0 Posted January 8, 2006 Blue_Joe, have you driven a corrado 1.8 16v if so what do you think of it?
Dub_nut_g60 0 Posted January 8, 2006 73K, thata nice and low!! sounds like it might be worth a look. so you know, all corrados were built by Karmann and so all have a 'karmann' interior, its something sellers try to make sound special! I know a few people on here have had problems with jabba rebuilds so might be worth a trip to g-werks to get it checked over. clicky - this the one? im sure if you ask nicely someone will either have a look for you or meet up with you to take a look
mo_527 0 Posted January 8, 2006 Dub_nut_g60, cool thank you, you mentioned a few people have had trouble with jabba rebuilds is there something i should look out for or should i avoid jabba rebuilds?
Dub_nut_g60 0 Posted January 8, 2006 all ive read on here is that some people chargers have grenaded after having a rebuild by jabba and some have had isseus with the actual rebuilds e.g. the size and quality of the apex strips. might be worth a search for yourself for some more info. Im not trying to worry you (or rubbish all work done by jabba) but just point out the issues other people have had! i know when i was buying i wanted all the inofrmation i could get!!
stevemac 0 Posted January 8, 2006 The problem with Jabba is that in the past they have been known to rebuild chargers that should have been thrown away. In my personal experience, a Jabba rebuild certificate is no guide as to the condition of the charger. Either have the charger checked out or budget for a possible £1000 when it blows up. mo_527 0 Posted January 8, 2006 Dub_nut_g60, thank you all the info im getting is really useful i have wanted a corrado for ages just couldnt afford, but i also want to make sure i get my moneys for and not but a car and spending more money on faults. If i come across a few things on the car is it ok for me to ask you please?
mo_527 0 Posted January 8, 2006 stevemac, your car looks real nice. ive got a question have you driven a corrado 1.8 16v if so what is it like?
stevemac 0 Posted January 8, 2006 stevemac, your car looks real nice. ive got a question have you driven a corrado 1.8 16v if so what is it like? I drove a 1.8-16v about a year ago but it was suffering engine problems. Can't really say what it would be like if the engine was running correctly. I doubt it would be too slow - uses the same/similar engine as the Golf 1.8 GTI 16v. One of my mates had one when they were new. He thought it was great but expectations back then weren't what they are now. If you're looking for a comparison - there's a big step from a 16v to a G60. G60 has far more torque.
