Recommended Posts

I suspect my CAT will need replacing after the MOT on Saturday. Any idea's on how much a new one will cost. Ideally I want a stainless steel one or as my car is a 1992 can I just bin the CAT and fit a bypass pipe?

My exhaust id a magnex cat back system.

cheers

I think it is from a "K" registration onwards that requires a cat to be fitted for MOT purposes.ie.August 1992.My last G60 was a May 1992 and i fitted a cat free exaust to it and had no problems at MOT time. The car seemed to be free-er reving when fitted. :D

Alright chap you can bin your cat if your car is registered before august 93 or K reg as it only became the law to have one after august 93. I had my cat removed when I had a full custom powerflow system made to my own specs. The whole system including the cat removal pipe cost £410 but the difference it made was astounding the car actually sounds like a race car it is really deep and throaty as I had a smaller centre box made up to make it louder. Alot of people say that de catting the corrado doesn't make alot of difference to the performance and some even say you will lose power as there is less back pressure created but I dont agree with that at all because I had my car on the rollers a couple of weeks before I had the exhaust done and it was pushing out 167bhp@ flywheel and then straight after I had the exhaust fitted I went back and had it rolled again and it was putting out 176bhp@ flywheel which I was well pleased with as it was mostly standard apart from an induction kit. My car is now pushing 202bhp with afew extra mods like a new stg4 charger, 68mm pulley and chip, but that still aint enough next will be NOS, cam and charge cooler when cash is available. back to the point a s/s de cat pipe will cost around the £100 mark for one to be made by powerflow if it's an early VR6 you've got then you can buy one from Magnex off the shelf for around £90 and it will be a bolt on job so if in the future you want to stick your cat back on then you can. Hope this helps :eating:

Sorry to nit-pick, but it's actually Aug 92 that the cat requirement became law.

Sorry but I'm going to nick pick now we were both wrong I ve just looked it up and they changed the law On the first of January !993 which states that any car registered after this date had to have a catalytic converter fitted to pass the MOT emmision test. So in other words we were both wrong

Hmm - that's an interesting fact. My car was registered December 16th '92. Does this mean I can remove my cat and get away with it at MOT time:?:

Try the link it contains all the new legislations passed in every year to date click on 1993 and look at line five of january it says and I quote "All new petrol vehicles to be fitted with catalytic converters." so I guess that if your car was registered in 1992 then you have no worries with taking your cat off. The site I have gone to is the department of transports home page so if this is wrong then the government have f***ed up big time. Hope this clears a few doubts that anyone has about removing your catalytic converters if your car is registered before January 1993 you dont have to have it on there NICE!!!!!!

I'm not going to risk it - check out another link I have found...(go to section B),I quote:

'The catalyst test is part of the MOT test for most class IV spark ignition petrol engined passenger cars with four or more wheels first used on and after 1 August 1992.'

This is the manual they use at the MOT test centre!

think i'd still prefer to nail my cars round the tt circuit with no speed limits (and no worrying about speed camera's) as fast as I can get the car to go round the corners.

there are straights where you could reach 145mph as well

You dont have any 3 or 4 lane motorways though that you can go side by side with your mates and race each other ( I dont do this of course!!!!!!!!!!!!!! driving at high speeds is dangerous on public roads!!)
