Hi, I have a set of RX2's (mk3 anniversery) and called a place to get them refurbed. I told the guy on the phone that they are two piece split rims but he seems to think they are three piece and therefore wont touch them. He said something about a seal?

 

Can anyone confirm. Two or three piece?

There bloody easy to split, whats the problem between 2 and 3 piece? You have to seal both kinds.

They are 2 piece and don't need to be sealed they are completely different to RMs and other 2 piece. The barrel stays complete with just the face being removable.

Just refurbed a set from my Polo GTI. If the centres are OK, split the rims yourself and polish polish the outer rims. Takes a bit of time but costs next to nothing to do and you have the satisfaction that you did it yourself. A lot of time is taken removing the bolts and this all adds up.

I'm not sure but I didn't think you could do this? I'm sure someone will either correct me or agree with me - something to do with the pressure from the tyre or something.

vr6 south - How did you polish the outer rim? Really its only the rim that needs to be refurbed on mine. It appears the elements have got under the laquer and turned the rim white. Did you re-laquer after polishing them?

 

Also, what torque did you tighten the bolts to when putting the wheels back together?

Mine are the same on my RK's, the lacquer has started to go on the rim. I'd be tempted to split mine myself and give it a go too, like you're doing...rather that than pay the extiornate amount for a refurb.

I masked the hidden part of the rim to preserve the remaining laquer and also masked over the bolt holes to stop any crap getting in. Also before re-assembly a thin layer of grease was used where the two parts meet to stop any further corrosion. Watch that the grease doesn't get in the bolt holes as they may cause the rim to crack due to the hydraulic effect. I didn't bother re-laquering the rims and maintained them with a regular polish of Autosol. You will need an M8 torx bit for the bolts which I obtained from my local motor factors for under £4.00. You can do the job without fully removing the tyres, just get the beads split and make sure that paint stripper does not come into contact with the tyre.
